I have artificial grass in my garden. A genius idea I thought with a three year old meaning I could clean the poo from my dog and not worry!
However... It's really started stinking!! It's been down for two years and its not a big garden. Does anyone have any experience with this? What can I do to stop it? I tried some watered down bleach. Left it. Then rinsed it. It worked for about two weeks but it feels like its stinking worse than ever now!!! It rained yesterday too so I wonder if that's making it worse...
Any tips etc would be really received. I can't afford to go back to lawn or change this grass

I doubt that fake artificial grass was ever invented so that dogs could pee on it for years on end, it looks lovely and no doubt is great to keep, but days and weeks and months of dog pee are going to cause a problem eventually. The only thing I can think of is if it is lifted up and the earth underneath is dug over or has a topping on it, earth needs to breathe and liquids need to evaporate, bleach will work for a little while but not for long as with any other product.

You may need to change it every few years I guess, or stop your dog/s from peeing on it, perhaps then it will have time to get rid of the smell.

Sorry, have no better advice...... I admit it looks lovely, but with dogs whether it is a permanently good idea it probably isn't.......

I use something card Yardfresh I think.  It comes in a bottle that you attach to the garden hose and it mixes with the water.  It smells lovely, I just do it around the edges where they tend to pee.  In the summer I do it every couple of weeks.
When I finish the bottle I have bought something else and decanted into the old bottle.  I didn't like the small of that one though so am back to the Yardfresh.

How long does the 1L bottle last you?  It just seems expensive, but if it works it will be worth it.  I was planning on using the Mistral Odourfresh (cheaper than that, and from reading other threads works well), but I'm looking for a sprayer that would dilute and spread it from our hose.  So if I were to buy this, is the 1L bottle that comes with it strong enough to keep using with something else decanted into it?

We just had ours done, half artificial grass and half real grass.  We were on a slope so we've levelled out the bottom and made it artificial, and then put a top tier in with real grass that we can section off through the wet months as I'm sooooo tired of mud.  I'm loving it, but with 5 whippets I'm obviously wanting to keep ahead of any smells.  We do have great drainage, and they added additional levels of drainage under it, but with the heat it seems to be drying up so quickly it doesn't have time to drain, so I'm catching just a teeny whiff here and there, and want to get to it before it becomes a problem.

And the dogs LOVE it.  They are spending more time outside playing on the new artificial grass than they ever did on the real stuff (or should I say the mud pit LOL).

Down here in the South it has been very hot and dry so it's cause this problem here too.

I use biological washing liquid daily but it needs a sprinkler every other day.....seems mad on artificial grass but it needs flushed through.

Yup I'm south too.  It's supposed to start chucking down tomorrow which would be great for the newly laid real turf section.

I don't mind 'watering' it to keep the smell away, as long as I'm not having mud constantly tracked everywhere.  It was bad enough already, but this past winter/spring just about did me in. 

I saw your tip on the bio washing liquid on another thread so we'll get some of that as well as the odourfresh we already have.

What does Yard fresh smell of?

When I went on their website earlier today they had two varieties, regular and citrus.  Will be interested to hear what someone who has used it says

I fancy trying it but was put off by their comment... Substitute for Jeyes Fluid..... Yuck!
If it smells like that or that bubble gum smell then it's a NO from me.

Love the smell of jeyes lol the other one to try is urine off also supposed to be good

I had problems with mine going on concrete until I washed with bio washing liquid in between using Yard Clean once a week, which incidentally, is made by the same company as Urine off.

I can definitely recommend using both.

now I am confused is it yard fresh or yard clean or are the different and then there is urine off :) so far only used bio but ws thinking of doing what you do Charlie brown and varying what I use

I initially bought it from the Urine Off stand at crufts.

Others have said they use bio washing liquid and I assume they dilute it with one of the hose diluting attachments.  How do you do it with the powder?  Do you just spread the powder on the turf then hose it down?

I dilute the liquid in a watering can but imagine the powder, although dissolved, would leave a white residue.

Funnily I tried it with powder yesterday and will now buy myself so me bio liquid as it didn't seem to dissolve properly

I bought the cheapest I could find.... Bio's Bio......

Lidl's own make smells just right for a garden I think. Very botanical.

Just a quick update tacked onto the end of this thread for anyone interested.  I decided to cover all bases LOL. 

I ordered a diluting spray hose attachment in order to be able to spray product properly diluted directly on the lawn.  It hasn't arrived yet, so we are still using a watering can.

Currently using Mistral Odourfresh.  It didn't seem to be working until I realised that I should also 'water' the artificial grass immediately after application in order for it to work through the grass and into the sand, through the turf etc.  The extra rain the past few days has helped.  Hubby went out and applied it in the rain on Friday night and that really got rid of the odour.  There wasn't much, he couldn't smell it, but I'm hyper sensitive to it, and worried about the neighbours. 

I have ordered some YardFresh +Plus to try, but it is so much more expensive than the Odourfresh, so we'll have to see.  And we've also picked up a bio washing liquid which we haven't tried yet.  Mostly waiting on the sprayer to arrive.

(ps - my friend who has had some in her enclosed dog run for 7+ years now and has several dogs uses Crommesol sp? on hers with a diluting sprayer, and has never had any odour issues and the grass is like the day it was installed)
