We are thinking of purchasing a border terrier and a westie, and this may be a stupid question, but does anyone think that they may not get on as they will be left alone through the day?

You do not say whether these are two puppies or two adult dogs. Nevertheless, it is impossible to say whether or not two dogs will get along or not. Generally they will sort out who is "boss", but this is not always without blood being shed, especially if you are planning to leave them unsupervised.

I personally do not believe anyone should get a puppy if it is to be left alone all day. Another puppy for "company" is not a good solution. General advice is not to get two puppies at the same time. Coping with one is difficult enough.
