My dog was very ill recently she was on a drip at the vets for a week ended up having a biopsy on her bowel vet thought she had cancer turned out to be an ulcer. Anyway she on tablets to line her stomach and stop her bringing up bile but I'm having a dreadful time trying to get the tablets down. I've hid them in every piece of food I can think of and tried putting them down her throat but no way will she take them has anyone any ideas as to how I can get them down her.

I train my lot to sit and catch food bits and so pills are his in banana or cheese and go down without any problem

I just give the command 'open' and gently open the mouth - one hand under jaw and other over. The one under is done using only last three fingers and base of thumb while forefinger and thumb hold pill. Gently tilt the head back to about 75 degrees, pop pill in, close mouth and rub under chin down to neck until I see them swallow. Job done. Chunk of cheese after.
Any other way and they throw the pill back out at me.

I've dunked pills in marmite which does the trick, I know marmite is not the best thing to give dogs, but they like it and it disguises the taste of pretty much anything. Can't stand the stuff myself.

Open tin of chappie - 3 'meatballs- made from chappie- pill is in second one............give 1st, dog eats slowly to check its 'safe', give 2nd while waving 3rd under dogs nose. they usually gulp 2nd so as not to miss out on 3rd. (also works with pink wafer biscuits :-D )
edited to add............usually ask for sit, down etc so its a 'reward' and less suspicious!

Thanks some great ideas. There very small pills one a day I tried giving her it in some nature diet I think she's eaten it then I find it on the floor she must hold it in her mouth till I'm not looking then spit it out. If it was any of the others there would be no problem. But this little minx is a pain.
It's even easier if you have several dogs. Just line them up in front of you. Nothing in first round of treats, pill for victim in second round but make sure they know there's a third treat and it will be swallowed at speed :)

I think this can vary in ease depending on the dogs muzle(type).
My breed is very easy, although one of my trio of youngest, is like an eel.
I put pills in the front of the middle 3 fingers..which are slightly cupped on my right hand. stand the dog to my left slightly facing me. Open the muzzle with my left hand over the top & using the tips of my left fingers, which is also helping to hold the tongue forward. I then tip the pills to the back of the throat..going down a fairly big hole..lol.
I am lucky 2 of mine eat their wormers & any other kind of 'sweeties' (as I call them). Although the other 6 have to use the method described above.

Our Tibetan Terrier used to winkle them out of treats then spit them out under his paws LOL Of coourse thhenn he couldn't move as we'd find them :-)
We had to use gsd's method

It varies so much from dog to dog. My oldie was so difficult to pill that not even a vet could pill her! Simply because she clamped her jaws shut and there was nobody strong enough to get them open! With her it worked easily to hide pills in food.
The best vet I have come across for giving pills was the one who wormed a pup of mine before going abroad on a pets passport. He cut the tablets into 3 parts and rolled ecah part into a piece of Hills AD which is so soft and irresistible. It made it a great experience for the puppy, when it could so easily have been a bad one had the vet just shoved the tablets down the pup's throat -which he could have done.

I had that with corvental - you think you have it down them but it's hiding in the folds round her jaw.i used to put it in bits of sausage but after a while she sussed that and wouldn't take it.
With non capsule tabs grind them or crush between 2 spoons and sprinkle into something they love. Although with tummy probs anyway it must be a real challenge.

Thanks everyone I try again tomorrow I tried hiding it in her food but that just made her suspicious of her meals so I don't want to do that I will try crushing it tomorrow and put it in some pilchards see if that works we haven't got many left now thank god.

If you keep them in the fridge they won't smell as strongly and will be easier to disguise.

I've only had one dog who I couldn't get a pill down, I resorted to crushing the pill and mixing it in pate, once it's smeared onto the roof of their mouth, they don't have much option but to swallow.

Be very careful crushing pills.
If they are supposed to dissolve slowly or are 'time release' then they will give a massive hit instead of steady medication ;-)

Squeezy cheese, something like primula with garlic, never had a pill thrown back yet... Try a small biscuit with the cheese first...never hid the pill in the first bit and then always have the 3rd bit on offer. ;-)

The tablets omeprazole it says give with or without food it doesn't say anything about crushing them I ring vet tomorrow and ask if it's ok if I can crush them might be the best way.

Yes, should have mentioned, do make sure they aren't slow release.

I happen to have Omeprazole in my cupboard.
The leaflet says to swallow the capsule whole, do not crush or chew, the capsules contain coated pellets which stop the medicine being broken down by the acid in your stomach.
These are obviously capsules, so still best to check with the vet.
