Topic Dog Boards / Health / Poorly after surgery for closed Pyo
- By tildob [gb] Date 16.07.14 13:43 UTC
I have posted this on another forum. My three and a half Bull Terrier had emercency surgery to remove infected uterus on Sunday. The vet said it wasnt to badly infected probably because she had been on ABs for 10 days before for Urine infection. Surgery went well he said her Ovaries were enlarged. That was Sunday and today she is still lethargic, shes eating and drinking ok prob drinking a bit more than usual.Shes toileting ok.
I have spoke to the vet everyday since and keeping him informed.Today he said she should be a lot better than she is , sent a urine sample in,no infection. What he did say was she could be having a phantom pregnancy and that would make her depressed. If she no better tomorrow he wantsto see her. What do you think

Don't forget, she's had a big operation.   Speying is an ovario-hysterectomy.   You'd expect a woman to take a bit longer to be getting around after such an op ;-)

I had a bitch speyed  and a mammary lump removed, 2 weeks ago tomorrow.

The first two days, she was very poorly,  pale gums, cold feet and ears, and didn't want to eat really, she'd take a little by hand.  I had to syringe liquids into her, she didn't want to get up and drink.   Kept her warm with a fleecy blanket.  The third day, she ate a little on her own and had a bit of a drink.  Still didn't want to move around and snuggled under the blanket.

I was fairly worried by the evening of the third day,  especially as that was when she had the last painkiller/anti-inflammatory.

But by the end of the fourth day,  when that painkiller ran out, she was very much brighter.   Started asking for food etc and generally a bit brighter.   Still reluctant to move around much.  Personally, I think the painkiller may have affected her stomach.

At 9 days the stitches were removed, and immediately she changed!   Totally happy to move around and positively bouncing.

These Bedlington Terriers would run around on a broken leg, but are really put out by the stitches 'biting' their bits.  Her mum was the same ;-)

As long as her wound is looking good, she's toileting ok, drinking ok, eating ok and her temperature is ok, and her gums normal, not pale or very red, I'd not be too worried.

But if you are worried in the meantime, take her in, better safe than sorry!

I've had two bitches spayed with pyometra in recent months -that was open however (so probably not as serious as your girl). The first 3 days after they were feeling very sorry for themselves indeed, after that they started to improve. It is major surgery and not at all as straight forward as a routine spay, so I don't think I would worry just yet.

I took her back to the vet.Temperature normal no sign of pain in abdomen, didnt think she was having a phantom. He gave Anti biotics and Tramadol, said if no better by Saturday we should to take her back in for fluids and a x ray.
Initially she went in for tests because she had a urine infection that wouldnt shift, they did ultra sound and saw fluid in uterus.Decided to operate but just before the op she vomited he tseted and saw Kidney enzymes were raised.Didnt operate but did another scan and he thought her kidneys looked strange.
We went to collect her and he thought she had kidney disease,we were devastated. On Sunday we took her to someone who knows more about this, who didnt think anything wrong with kidneys after scanning and testing her for 2 hours. What he did say was she had Pyo and it needs to come out, couldnt understand why my vet had left it. To be fair to my vet he didnt want to operate with her kidney enzymes raised.
Drove 2 and half hours straight to my vet who removed her Uterus on Sunday evening.
My vet said yesterday during the op they had a good look at her kidneys and her bladder so she would be very sore from the manipulation as well as the uterus removal.
Today she had me up at 5.30 for a drink and shes slept since,i really am out of my mind with worry.
I really dont want to take her back into the vets, she is so stressed now when she goes.

I can't really help re the Pyo specifically as thankfully we've never had one, closed or open.   However, a spay surgery is invasive without including the fact a pyometra is an infection and she may have had this for quite some time before the true situation was discovered.    Double whammy.    She has to recover from the spay AND the effects of the raging infection.    Having had a serious of terrible vets since we moved away from our trusted one of 13+years up in Herts., I have really lost faith in vets in general!   However, you do have to trust them, within reason although if she's not picking up soon, I'd be off for a second, third, whatever it takes, opinion.    Could be she needs a tonic (really - I had a bitch who had a hard time with an albeit small litter (but a 'Section) and she was given one.

You might add some natural yogurt to her food - to counter the antibiotics she's been having.  Tramadol - my terminal cancer bitch was put on this at one point - it totally zonked her out to the point I took her off it.   She was only given that because she was having loose stools which they put down to the Metacam.   Turns out it wasn't to do with that - her brother had the same problem within 24 hours.   She went back onto Metacam.

Just to add, if she was in serious trouble, I'd tend to think she'd not settle ...... she needs all the sleep she can get, quiet and warmth (that should be okay in the UK today!!!).    Bland food - scrambled egg, poached chicken, tinned Chappie even .... all easily digested but which should give her some nourishment at least.

>i really am out of my mind with worry.

I know this is easier said than done, but try not to worry :) Your bitch will sense you are upset and this will make her anxious. She will not understand why you are upset, so try to remain calm and carry on as 'normal'. I also agree, that if she was in trouble she would not settle. She has had major surgery and it 'hurts'! Give her time and I am sure she will bounce back. If you are still worried and feel she needs a vet, maybe they would be happy to come out to you but expect to pay through the nose if they do!

>My vet said yesterday during the op they had a good look at her kidneys and her bladder so she would be very sore from the manipulation as well >as the uterus removal.

Ahhh  She's going to feel like she's been thoroughly kicked by donkeys!   (Been through the same myself, and it's far worse than just the op ;))

Add to that she's had the infection some time, and you can expect her to be taking longer to bounce back.

I can understand your concern, especially since Bull Terriers are so exhuberant and seem indestructible most of the time and don't seem to acknowledge pain!

It seems your vet has covered the possibility of any residual infection with the antibiotics

Just thought I'd mention too.  Although my girl hasn't been through as much as your Bully, she is still sleeping far more than usual.  Bouncing around a bit now in between, but it has been two weeks ;)

If you're still worried on Saturday or even before, do take her to the vets or get them out ;)

Thanks everyone for the replies it does reassure me a little but i am a terrible worrier and cant help thinking that she is laying there dying while i sit and watch.
She is still very quiet, wouldnt eat liver or heart which she normally loves. My husband suggested cooking her a couple of sausages(not very good for her i know but thought it would cheer her up) She wolfed them like she was starving.
I have put some glucose in her water too
I am hoping it is the Tramadol making her feel like this, wont be giving her anymore during the day, might give her one at bedtime thought it might help her sleep.
What tonic do you mean ? i will go out and get some and give it a try.
The vet said if no better by Saturday they would put her on a drip and x ray so she would have to visit the surgery im afraid
Anyone else had a bitch so poorly after this type of surgery ?
- By ridgielover Date 17.07.14 14:54 UTC
I've only ever used Tramadol once, for a short while on my terminally ill dog, and it knocked him out, made him very sleepy
- By Tish [gb] Date 17.07.14 15:19 UTC
No advice to offer - Just wanted to wish you and your girl well. from yours and everyone's post you are doing everything you can and taking all the advice offered. I believe Tramadol is pretty heavy duty (i have only known humans who have had it and said it left them zonked)

hoping she improves soon xx

Hi Tildob,

I hope your girl is feeling a bit better today.  It's always worrying after an op but I find that tempting them with their favourite titbits quite often works....and then they turn their nose up and I have to find something else.  Little and often is my mantra after an op.  Scrambled eggs, sardines, pilchards and not forgetting your sausages.  I will quite often roast a chicken, take off the meat to use, either for me or them and then use the bones to make stock to flavour the food.  I don't add anything to the bones other than water or maybe a carrot or two if I have any.  Good luck.

She was much better yesterday, but today shes very quiet and as vomited twice.Wont eat anything neither.
The sick was just water

Maybe in this hot weather you could freeze the stock.

I hope you are both doing well

All the best

Vomited yellow bile ! Think it may be because she hadnt eaten anything.I cooked some diced beef and she ate a small amount.Hope she can keep it down.
- By tildob [gb] Date 19.07.14 15:59 UTC
Sha has just been playing with a ball.Im so confused
- By Tish [gb] Date 19.07.14 20:54 UTC
Sorry if i am graphic here but that sounds like she was a bit "liverish" i get that with a migraine - once the bile is out i feel 100% better. Ginger helps for me but i would wait for advice from one of the  members. am hoping this is the cause for your girl also - lots of heavy duty meds taxing her on top of what the others have said is a pretty hectic procedure.

Hope you are both well this pm sounds really positive she has been up for a bit of ball play!

She is so poorly after her 2nd dose of Chemo.I am waiting for the Vet to open. She has been vomiting for 24 hours and is very lethargic. I called the Vet yesterday and he said if no improvement today to take her in.Poor mite!!!
- By tildob [gb] Date 06.08.14 08:42 UTC
Vet couldnt be sure if it is the chemo making her ill because there is a lot of sickness bugs about. He gave anti biotics, anti sickness and Steroid injections.
He wants to see her again on Friday. If it is the Chemo we need to re think the Chemo Protocol, apparently she will be more sick with each dose !
