For those breeders who elect not to use 'conventional' wormers in pups. How do you broach the subject with prospective puppy buyers and do they accept it.

As I have always wormed our litters, at 2 weeks and every 2 weeks thereafter up to the time they go home, I can't help you.    I suppose it's a bit like those who prefer to use unconventional external vaccination.   If asked, reply honestly.   Prospective buyers can then take it or leave it.

After worming our 6 week old puppies twice using conventional wormers defo go for it. I used to use Panacur 10% and never saw any worms. This time used Drontal puppy OMG never seen so may so yes use the right treatment

That is because the wormer dissolves them and destroys larval stages.

You would only see expelled adult worms with a very heavy worm burden.  Have seen it using Panacur on a rescue litter of GSD's that looked like pot bellied stoves.

For the first worming I use a milder wormer like Sherleys (sp?) Then onto Panacur for subsequent worming.  Anytime I have used Panacur or Drontal at 2 weeks I have ended up with at least one sick puppy.  I think its just too strong at that age especially if they have not started weaning.

This is why I don't worm pups until 3 weeks, once they are already on solid food which I start introducing at 18 days.

As I worm the bitch daily with Panacur in last trimester of pregnancy my feeling is they can afford to wait a little longer as any worm burden will be light.

I then worm again at 7 weeks for three days, so that the tums have settled before they leave.  Fewer worried phonecalls about pup being loose when arriving home.

I worm at 7 weeks so they are settled before leaving. Always start from 2 weeks - not had a sick puppy from it but wonder if the size of the puppy is a factor. Mine are a medium/large breed and at 2 weeks are a good size.

I used Sherleys in the past. For the dogs, it did not get rid of worms at all. For the cats, it caused one of mine to have a stroke. She was only a year old. I have since spoken to several other people whose cats have either had strokes or fits after being wormed with Sherleys. At the time we contacted them and complained, their reply was that something like 1 % of all animals treated will have a serious reaction so sorry, not their problem. My vet told me to never, ever use over the counter wormers again, and I never have done and have never had another problem.

I worm my pups with Drontal puppy at 3, 5 and 7 weeks for the large breed pups, for the tiny toys (where some end up just 2 kilos in weight as adult, others 3-4) I do 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 (as they go at 12 or 14 weeks). Never had a problem even with the smallest.
