Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Puppy nearly 4 weeks old. eye infection and not well.

My terrier gave birth to two puppies, one of which died after 5 days of a constant battle to keep him going. The other puppy who is now nearly 4 weeks old has an eye infection which the vet has given me Fucithalmic eye drops. Infection seems to be getting worse or maybe i am impatient. How long does this take to work..??
Also, he has either a cold or a lung infection. The vet was not sure.
His mum had mastitis and now is on antibiotics. I am feeding the puppy welpi via a small syringe as he will not suckle anymore. I don't know what else to do apart from keep him warm with vetbed / hot water bottles / cuddly toys etc... and obviously feed him.
Any advice anyone can give me will be appreciated.....

Hello Pink-hearts
So sorry you are having such a difficult time. I am concerned that your puppy could possibly be showing early signs of Juvenile Pyoderma/Puppy Strangles. This conditions often presents at the age your puppy is . Eye lesions ,which do not respond to 'normal' treatment and unwillingness to feed ,the latter being due to lesions in the mouth ,are early signs of the condition. We had a 'Strangles' puppy a year or so ago and I'm happy to say that she made a full recovery although this took a few months. I would  not wish at this stage to go into more detail . i would advise another consultation with your vet. The condition is uncommon and most vets will not encounter it in a lifetime of practice. But the uncommon happens, as they say. As far as I'm aware, JRs are not a breed in which it is more frequently encountered -Golden Retrievers. Gordon Setters ,Dachshunds  and Spaniel breeds , among others, are the more usual 'suspects' Please feel free to PM me

Hi Jan. Thank you for your reply. Puppy is feeding well now every 3-4 hrs, even through the night and putting on weight. Also, his eye seems to be clearing up nicely. Not worried anymore particularly, apart from his sniffles......which i think he has a cold. He's very active now and getting a lot stronger..... :-)

So pleased for you and puppy.

Following our experience I'm always alert to the possibility of  'Puppy Strangles'
