Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Plastic whelping boxes

Has anyone had problems with vet bed slipping around in plastic whelping boxes. I am trying a steel city whelping box this time rather then my wooden one which is great for keeping clean but the base of it is so slippery and i'm worried about the pups splaying their legs where they can't grip the floor. I have one large piece of vet bed in the box that completely covers the base bit it slips around leaving the slippery floor exposed.....am wondering about rubbing matting??

Thankyou
Ali

I used newspaper in the entire box, under the vetbed as well, then rubber backed vet bed. No slipping whatsoever. :) Normal vetbed seems to slide on almost any surface (at least once washed a few times) but again newspaper underneath helps.

I use a Steel City whelping pen with vet bed but also line it all with newspaper first.

I don't have any slipping puppies or vet bed.

I use a Snowsilk whelping box and put newspaper under normal vet bed and haven't had any trouble :)

I only ever used the rubber backed vetbed once, but my puppies started chewing the backing so I reverted to the traditional vetbed. My whelping box has a non-slip floor - Ultra Dog Kennels, strong & heavy duty, I can highly recommend them.

We have a Cosy Kennels whelping box, but I use the mats I got when I purchased a Newdog Cardboard whelping Box a few years back. They are made of Vet Bed and come with an insert to make them rigid so the bitch can't ruck them up, and they fit snuggly in the box so don't slip. They were quite expensive at the time, but he promised me that they would do at least 10 litters before needing replacing. He was right.

Hello,

They do make non slip vetbed that what I would recommend using.  There is a review here that might help: vet bed review

Hi Tyddhound I have looked at these mats before and I'm considering getting one.I would probably go for the 48" x 48" but apparently they come in two sections and do seem quite expensive for what you get.Your thoughts?

Hi Celtic Lad, Like you I thought they were a bit expensive, but I'm pleased to say that they...apart from my whelping box.... are one of the best investments I ever made. I've had mine for 8 years and although the vet bed is now a bit flat and some of the corners a bit chewed and frayed, I'm still using them. They velcro together so no chance of two mats riding up over each other, the bitch can dig as much as she likes and they won't ruck up, the outer cover is machine washable...But Do Not Tumble Dry.....and the plastic insert you just wipe down with a anti-bac cloth.

Mine are due for renewal, and I'm definitely going to go to the expense of getting them again.

Hi Tyddhound I take it you did not go for the absorbent insert also.

No, but I don't remember there being absorbent inserts available when I got mine. I do however put old Bath Sheet size Towels on top of mine to absorb the wet and goo, as they are cheap and also easy to wash. The legs from the Pig Rails keep them in place, so again the bitch has difficulty rucking these up too

I use cardboard boxes flattened out on top of the floor, with newspaper on top, then vetbed.   Never had a problem!

I used these until one of mine got in a sulk one day and destroyed them.
My fault as should only have used these for whelping and rearing purposes Duh
Anyway I also thought they were expensive outlay BUT apart from the chore of inserting the plastic sheet (as they were quite tight fit) they really do their job. Also wash after wash they came up white.
Last time bought new vetbed to fit exactly the freedom pen floor trays and on the whole these worked well although she did ruck them up here and there.
