I can't imagin them cooling a dog that much to be honist as its covering such a small area with the cold bit. I've seen one of the UK cool coat makers had a bandana one. I was told u want the cool bits to cover where they lose the heat more which is why some of the coats have a band that goes around the belly. (Well that's what one of the coat makers told me)

Also it says u freeze it first, not sure how comfortable it would be to have something frozen taken straight out the freezer and put on the dog would be. Would it not be too cold too quick?

There was one or two things that worried me. The very cold being tied around the neck and if the dog didn't like it you would have to be very aware. I guess its similar to the ubiquitous pack of peas for first aid

As far as I can see they are just run of the mill, buy anywhere & everywhere normal clunk, click snap on collars with fancy stuff someone stitched around them, maybe from waste rags.

I think its an excellent get rich quick business idea from someone somewhere - if you click the link below thats the exact same, but bare, type collar on my dog but without the extra frills.............I guess the real answer to your question is that if you feel good about having one then get it & enjoy it!

The cool coats I have just need to be soaked and squeezed before being put on the dog, who then stays dry and cool.  This means that it is possible to "recharge" the coat should it be necessary.  Not possible with something that needs freezing to work.

These wonderful new designs are being crafted as we speak

I 'really did' bust out laughing aloud when i read that.....of boy what next, nail polish for dogs or some such bright idea.

Would you put a frozen collar around your neck (and leave it on for more than a minute or two) when you were hot?  Do you think it would be good for you if you did?  Same goes for a dog.

I've only used a cool coat and felt that it worked very well as it keeps more of the dog cool. The one I have covers almost all the back and sides with a thick band under the dog and another band across the chest. It remains wet and cool for up to four hours depending on how much direct sunshine is on the dog and can be easily replenished using  a bottle of water. Feeling the dog underneath the coat I was amazed how cool she is.
I can't imagine something just round the neck is going to be that effective.

Nah, I like my cool coats too. That little strip of fabric is never going to keep the whole dog comfortable and cool.

Actually first aid for heat stroke is applying cold water to the neck. It rapidly cools the blood entering and leaving the brain via major blood vessels.

Keeping an ice cold collar on would be painful ..the equivalent to ' brain freeze' I would imagine.

But isn't it with heat stroke they say not to use too cold water as you want to gradually bring down the temp not suddenly drop it? At least that's what I've read.

I've got the aquamat cool coat as others have said its one where u just wet it with normal water. We used it on a herding taster day and after an hour all the other dogs were panting except mine.

I've just been reading the diary I keep when we are away in the motorhome. In 2010 the dog I had then began to suffer with heart problems and reading the diary I realised how short our walks had become and how little we were doing as she became tired very quickly especially so if it was warm. The following year I bought the cool coat when we were at Crufts and she was able to do far more when wearing the coat and carry on for longer. To be honest it was an absolute godsend and allowed her to do far more then before and enjoy another two years or so doing what she liked best; being with us and going for nice long walks in the countryside.

I've come up with money making idea. Dogs lose heat through their paws. How about Cool Boots ? lol Someone would be sure to buy them.
