Well I doubt there is a right or wrong way. Just each to there own. My mentor never took deposits and I have followed suit and it has been fine for me on the whole.
I do think though when you are getting up into the £200 plus non refundable deposit that is a high amount but of course agree that no one surely would go into that without thought as to whether they could afford that £200 if things were not right at the time.
