Someone I know is wanting to use our male doberman to mate with her female doberman. We don't want a puppy. What would be a reasonable cost for charging her a stud fee?

Missy is right its around that price. I assume you have had your male tested for Von Willebrands disease, and Cardiomyopathy, two MAJOR killers in Dobermanns.

Would you also be willing to take on looking after the puppies if the breeder is ill? Would you be able to advise the bitch owner exactly when to bring the bitch for mating and how many times. If the bitch is reluctant would you know what to do. If they are tied and struggling with the bitch in distress again, would you know what to do? Also the temperament of many dogs change once they have mated a bitch and you may regret it.
It sounds like easy money, but its not! Even if your dog has had all the previously mentioned health tests - which are essential - has the bitch had them and had good results. If not it is possible there could be puppies in the litter that have a hereditary disease which your dog may be partly responsible for and you possibly partly legally responsible!! Puppy owners these days will go to court at the drop of a hat.
Be responsible and advise her to have her bitch tested and not to breed her if the results are poor. Advise her to use a proven stud dog from an experienced and preferably show winning kennel handled by someone who knows what to do and can give her lots of advice about whelping and rearing/sale of puppies. Really its not worth it .
I am sorry if this is not what you want to hear, please dont think I am "having a pop", Many people come on the board with this same question but because they are inexperienced (with stud work issues) dont realise what they are letting themselves in for. Maiden (virgin) dogs rarely know what to do til they have had a couple of "goes" anyway and the chances are he wont perform you will be embarrased and the bitch owner disappointed!!

And of course he should be hip scored, and eye tested for PHPV!

All these testes are likely to cost you around £250, and then you may find he won't perform!

There is of course your responsibilities to the breed and the pups, will you be abole to help the breeder out if any of the pups need rehoming? Also with such a large breed is his temperament really rock solid, neither aggressive or nervous in any way, and do you know that the bitch is also? If there is even a shadow of doubt over this aspect then don't breed from him, as how would you feel if one of his pups had a temperament problem, and either harmned someone, or had to be put to sleep, how would you feel?

I would also seek advise from your dogs breeder, as to wheteher they think your boy is of a high enough standard to offfer the breed something, and to check if the bitch's pedigree is compatible.

Maiden dogs are generally used first on the owners own bitch so that they can prove he is fertile etc etc. Otherwise the first time a dog is used is often FOC.

are stud fees different in different breeds % wise.in staffords a ch stud dog costs around HALF the price of a puppy.

I was only mentioning this to my husband today. We have always paid £200 for a champion stud dog which is roughly half the price of a pup. However speaking to other breed owners they have to pay the price of a pup. I know some Bordeaux stud fees are about £800+ which again is more or less the price of a pup but we only charge £500.00 for our stud dog purley because half the price of a pup is the way we are used to with the staffs. To be honest I think half the price of a pup is a fair price, after all the bitch owners have the worry and cost of the pregnancy and the work involved with the pups. I always think if there was only one puppy too.

In my breed stud fees are the puppy price regardless of whether the dog is a Champion or not. If the dog is a maiden then the stud fee isn't payable until the bitch is found to be in whelp, but other than that it is the price of a pup, but then even a well used stud will not sirte many litters in his lifetime.

One of the most influnetial stud dogs in our breed, and an Import sired 20 litters over 9 years, and most won't sire half that, and others will only ever be used once or twice.

Why not wait and see firstly if he performs and whether she is willing and then whether any puppies result. Both dog and bitch should be tested for relevant breed related problems. I would also want to check that pedigree lines are compatible. As for stud fees you might suggest that they pay a nominal fee if the bitch produces or you may change your mind and take a puppy. People are quick to blame the stud dog for all that goes wrong in mating or if the bitch misses - strange to say some bitches are brought on the wrong day, some lines just do not gel and sometimes bitches reabsorb or just don't want to be mums. Whatever you do you must realise that as the owner of the possible father you are in effect equally responsible for the babies!!!
