I've just been quoted £114 for a pet passport (apparently that is with a 10% discount as well). (a) Do you think that is about right, or excessively expensive and (b) if the latter, do you have any suggestions for a vet practice in the Lancashire/West or North Yorkshire area?

If the dog is already microchipped we charge about £85 for the rabies vax and passport.

I recently paid £71 but the pup was microchipped already and it included my 15 % discount that my vets gives me on everything, so I would assume it would be around £100 without a discount and with a microchip needed.

That's less than I have been charged in the past (though it was £200 with the cost of the blood test).  If I remember rightly Rabies Vaccs was £55 and Pet passport document was £50.

Then you may also need to factor in the cost of a health certification/fit to travel (depends on what transport company/airline require) of around £60 around here.

I have just done one and called around few local practises.
There was a bit of a difference so definately worth calling few practises . I got mne for £65, vaccination&passport

We send quite a lot abroad for fitness to travel and acclimatation form we are charged £17 for pet passport we are charged £10 for issue then £19 for the rabies

As others have said, shop around. A friend of ours was coming out on holiday here with his 2 dogs. His Vet quoted something like £140 plus per dog. He went to his sister's Vet about half an hour away (I think Frodsham) and got both dogs done for under £100 in total

Thanks everyone! I have called round and found somewhere charging less than half of what my own vets wanted. Would like to hear their explanation as to why the huge difference in price. 

We are based near Meriden but I use a vet in  Coventry. He is very good and very cheap, he is also an LVI for all dogs going abroad. A recent dog we sent to Australia with blood tests and treatments over 6 months cost us just short of £500, out of curiosity a rang a few others, the cheapest for all treatments, forms etc I could get was £2,457. big difference.

Update on the cost of a pet passport: it cost just £43.50 in the end. In fact it was so cheap I am getting my old boy done too so he can come along as chaperone when we go, which will keep my bitch a lot calmer. Compare that to the "discount price" I was quoted of £114!

Anyway, I asked him why there was a difference in prices between vets and this is what he said.

I keep my prices very low/reasonable for essential care so I mark up items which I consider to be "luxury" items.

It's everyone's choice, in the end, of course, midnightvelvet. I have 4 dogs (hopefully soon to be 5) and £600 would be unthinkable for me, whereas £170 is affordable and more importantly means I don't have to choose which dogs would have to be left behind.

Best of all, this vet is excellent, does a lot of work on breeding and is very supportive/keen to share good practice. So glad we have moved to his practice!
