Can anyone who has had experience with a miscarriage/abortion please let me know what I am to expect as I have never experienced this before ever and am so heartbroken. This girl missed 6 months ago, put back to the same dog this time, 2 great ties, confirmed pregnancy, all going along ok until today.....sudden discharge and swollen vulva....internal exam revealed she is fully dilated. We thought we see a heartbeat on her scan today so what is the chances with ab's she could go onto deliver 1 or 2 live puppies. could she lose some and still deliver as normal in 12 days....she is obviously my priorty and is on antibiotics and back at the vets in the morning but would be interested to hear any peoples stories that have sadly experienced anything like this.....its just awful sitting here feeling helpless to save her babies for her :(

Had similar last year, 9 days early, first 4 puppies born sleeping, good sizes and looked fine, next 3 were not fully formed. The vet thought that something had gone wrong earlier which had caused the early labour. He did say at the time that the labour may stop and she could carry the rest full term but unfortunately this did not happen. Poor girl followed me round for days as she thought I had taken her puppies. It was heartbreaking.
I lost a litter at the 6-7 week stage having appeared to be a normal pregnancy until then and been scanned for a large litter.
At 7 weeks it was obvious she had shrunk and at term 3 dead puppies were delivered.
I feel for you as it was the worst experience I had. My vet suggested canine herpes and now I jab for that but we will never really know.

well she is still losing a lot of brown discharge and today I can not feel any movement which I could yesterday, so it does look like she is losing/lost her whole litter :(
just so worried about her now but vet doesn't want to go in unless we have to as if its messy in there he said opening her up is very risky so better if she can pass it all herself but is a very upsetting thing to have to just watch her go through and not be able to help! This was a special litter and I had hoped for a beautiful little girl, after getting to 7 weeks and then this happening it is so sad

I can't say anything to help but just wanted to say how sorry I am that you and your girl are going through this.

How devastating for you and for her....I can't imagine how you must be feeling! In my recent litter, one of the little boys didn't make it and even though I know it's natures way and there was nothing I could do, it just never gets any easier, does it? Just wanted to say how sorry I am xx

Heartbreaking. :(

well my girl went to term and delivered 7 dead puppies, all had died at different stages of development......heartbroken is an understatement and its the worst thing I have ever experienced with breeding, had my girl xrayed yesterday to ensure she was empty and had managed to pass them all....thank god she had so hopefully now we can both start to recover.
The awful part is not knowing why this happened.....constant questions of could I of prevented it? did I miss something? why? just awful but thank god I still have my girl :( x

So very sorry to hear this. How devastating for you.
So sorry to hear the outcome. Brings back an awful memory but take heart my girl went on to have a successful litter later and recovered within a couple of weeks. Take care.

can I ask if you did anything different on the following attempt other than the herpes (at the moment im not even sure I will but time heals) I would love a puppy from her as that was the whole point of this mating so just curious to know as if I do try again I know I will be on edge everyday! x
No - just the herpes jab. She had, had a litter before the lost one and my vet said there was no reason why she should not have a healthy litter again. She had a litter of 7 all alive. No more after that.
In fact the daughter I kept had 3 litters, 12, 15 ( 1 didn't make it ) and then 8. The daughter I kept from her has had a litter of 10 all surviving. It seems to have been a one off and I will never actually know for sure whether it was the Herpes virus.
