Topic Dog Boards / Health / lungworm treatment

I want to treat my little dogs for lungworm. I have no idea whether they have it or not but my pugs a licker and licks everything and anything picks stuff up and eats a lot of grass. I was looking last night for otc meds for it and panacur was the only one. Am I right in thinking it advised me to treat for 7 consecutive days? Will be almost £20 to treat a very small dog!

Advocate spot on...sounds like I'm an agent for Pfizer!

I also have pugs and mine had a blood test to check they was clear of lung worm something my vet does yearly.

What's the bloodtest called. And how much does it cost. Its about time for general flea and wormer anyway. But been thinking abiut her recently and the grass and things she eats. Bar dry biscuits!

On a similar thread a while ago, someone recommended these kits which I've been meaning to send for,

Would much prefer to know if treatment is needed, than medicate unnecessarily.

Wow that is really good.  Some years back I paid a lot more than that for Langford to do mine.

I have just been to my vet and his recommendation is Advocate.  I understand the only worm it doesn't get rid of is tapeworm.  It is also only a one "spot on" treatment.  According to the package it also for the treatment and prevention of  fleas, lice, ear mites and sarcoptic  mange, not that I am suggesting your dog has these!

The great debate is the 'unnecessary use of chemicals'
but once you've seen a Lungworm case and recently heard of two more young dogs with it...Id rather take that risk.

I too have never seen a flea nor a worm ( I Panacur their pregnant mothers) but I just wont risk it.

Yes Toolz I too would rather take my chances with chemicals than watch my girl wasting away as she was when she was diagnosed with lungworm.  So we advocate as a preventative, but to treat it is a 7 day panacur course.  Advocate won't get rid of an infestation

Zuma had mild lungworm in Jan 2008 and was given Advocate to treat and clear it, it worked.

Treatment of lungworm in dogs
For Angiostrongylus and Crenosoma the recommended drug treatment is Advocate which contains imidacloprid and moxidectin. This is a spot on preparation which is applied to the back of the dog's neck.  This drug kills the fourth larval stage and immature adults.
Milbemax (which contains milbemycin) will "reduce the level of infection" with Crenosoma and Angiostrongylus however the dosing schedule is very different to the usual recommended one and care may be required in breeds such as collies who are sometimes sensitive to this group of drugs.
