Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Chicken Broth and loose stools?

I have always given my girls the "juice" from a pan of boiled chicken after they have had the pups. They love it and I thought that it would be good for them but last time (two years ago) my girl had diarrhoea for several days afterwards. I was blaming the panacur wormer as she had been a bit loose from day 40. This time I decided to have a dummy run, just in case it was the chicken. I bought a chicken and gave her the meat and she had no reaction whatsoever. A couple of days ago, I again boiled a chicken ready for the whelping in a couple of days. This time, I gave all my dogs, including the one in whelp, some "juice". They have all had the runs since. Is it that it is too concentrated for them to cope with? Would I be better giving her just water and glucose or goat's milk? Would be interested to know what you give your girls after the whelping.

My girl hated the glucose in water but but loved honey while whelping and shes now drinking goats milk.

Ooh thats a coincidence. I just found an old post on Champdogs about a gruel to give the girls after whelping. I went out and got all the ingredients, one of which is honey so thanks for that.

Did you remove the skin first?

sorry, yes I did.

I wondered if it was the skin that was the problem, but obviously not.  I do hope she picks up soon.
