Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Temperature dropped very low 2 days ago?
- By Puggylee [gb] Date 24.05.14 08:37 UTC
Hey, so my bitch is on day 59 from 1st mating, her mother and grandmother have both whelped on day 60 the breed have short pregnancies, the temperature drop has always worked for me, only had 4 litters previous to this so not an expert by any means, anyway these are the temperature readings-
Day 55.. 37.5
Day 56.. 37.6
Day 57 am.. 36.4
          Noon.. 36.7
           Pm.. 37.0
Day 58 am.. 35.6
          Noon.. 36.7
           Pm.. 37.3
Day 59 (this morning).. 35.9

With my other bitches once the temperature dropped to 36, labour began after 12 hours every time. She doesn't look like she's ready anytime soon, no digging, still eating (a lot more the last 2 days than she has throughout her pregnancy) she was panting very very lightly last night but then went to sleep so maybe she was just hot, and has been sleeping very well day and night, she's not at all restless. Should I be worried or can the temperature go so low and stay there without labour starting? If anyone has any info or had a similar experience I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thank you

Iv also had a drop that low my pups wher born that night it never went back up if it was me id see what happens in next 12-24h if no pups then vets ..but is your breed have problems whelping?
- By Puggylee [gb] Date 24.05.14 13:03 UTC
Thank you for the reply, the breed are not easy whelpers and are known for having problems, however my bitch is from a long line of self whelpers, her mother and grandmother both whelped lovely healthy litters with no problems, so I'm hoping she will be the same, Ill have to wait and see but will definitely call the vet if no pups in 12-24 hours. Thanks again

Hello sorry for the delay, took her to the vet as she wanted to have a look at her (my vet has an out of hours surgery 5 mins away) and she said she's not worried and everything seems fine, she's only day 60 today from the first mating and 58 from last mating, she also said not to rely to much on the temperature drop as Cilla's temp is low in the morning, a bit higher but still low at noon and then much higher in the evening it's not staying low for a solid 8 hours, her temperature has been going up and down for days now so I've given up on that. I don't really need to pinpoint the drop I suppose as I'm not planning on going anywhere, just being impatient. She hasn't eaten her breakfast which is a first, I'll keep you updated.

I have never used temperature as a guide.

Most breeders I've spoken to don't, I don't think I will again either hazenaide.

>I have never used temperature as a guide.

Same here.  I know some people are fanatical about it.

Never used it either, don't fancy subjecting my girls to the indignity several times a day LOL

Still have that vision from the Eddie Murphy Dr Doolittle film, with 'Buddy' having his temp taken.

Do you know Barbara, you are the first person to mention that, but it's how I feel too.  I am sure my girls would let me, but I always think that I would hate you keep sticking something up my bum however many times a day.   And I think once the poor things have a big belly, which we chose to do to them, why suffer any more than they have to.  :-)

Yep I'm sure I  could do it, but the looks and sighs, not to mention trying to lift them onto a table by then so I could actually see.

Enjoy the first few weeks before the real hard work starts!

This I can relate to - once the first few days are over and mum is obviously settled to her job, I take a breather until the 'real work' starts, with weaning!!!   Congrats on the new arrivals tho.
