Topic Dog Boards / General / Vinyl or Flotex flooring

Getting closer to replacing the horrid carpet....

Now am trying to decide between vinyl or flotex.
Does anyone have experience of what flotex is like as a flooring with dogs?

Sounds like it could really work, the one with the Sanitized process.

I could never use flotex... it is one of those things that makes my flesh crawl, like running fingernails down a blackboard.  Its to do with the texture. I would go to a showroom take your socks and shoes off and see if you can walk on it without feeling creepy like I do !!

Now I rather like it, it has a nap which I find nice.

Flotex wouldn't be my choice - the older generation used to have patterned Flotex in their kitchens in th 80s.  :)

I had 'Piddle proof' light coloured carpet for years.  It looked good but I was ahampooing it monthly and it didn't 'feel' clean inbetween.  Now that I've found Karndean, I wouldn't go back to carpet downstairs, dogs or no dogs.  :)

I have had flotex back in the 80's :) excuse me westcoast didn't think I belonged to the older generation lol   It was ok  but hard to keep really clean with dogs. I have to agree with westcoast I would have kardean or amtico or similar.

Thinks..... oh yes that's what I have in the kitchen and hall and have for a long long time now ( being so old I mean haha )

Lol took other half to carpet shop and he didn't like the feel of the flotex underfoot.
Which is really funny as I'd thought he'd prefer it to the vinyl (previously been very resistant to vinyl).
He was also put off by the 'patterns' or lack of choice lol no light brown's....

So now it's just finding a good anti slip vinyl :) so getting closer....thank goodness

Have heard mixed things about Karndean, but will go to another flooring place (just popped to carpet right for ease today)
and see what they have to offer and how long things take to do (we have concrete screed floors underneath the carpet and underlay)

We've got top quality vinyl, it looks fabulous and is ideal with the dogs. I'm delighted with it. :-)

We have Vinyl here, non slip it has slight ridges built in and really works with the large dogs no skidding. So easy to keep clean, would not go back to carpet again now.
Has anyone got any ideas for stairs and landing areas ? I want to get rid of the carpet there as well, but you can't really put vinyl on the stairs. I have seen some painted but I think they would get scratched in no time, also it would be noisy.

Which vinyl do you have?

We had Flotex in the eating area of our kitchen 25 years ago. It was comfortable under foot and easy to mop up food spills etc with children. We had ceramic tiles in the cooking area in case hot things were dropped on the floor. Once we got a puppy the Flotex wasn't good - she ate it and I never thought that it was properly clean after 'accidents' - this was born out when we took the Flotex up and could see what was under the tiles ! We're currently having problems with our elderly dog and ceramic tiles makes cleaning up thoroughly much easier. I'm not a fan of vinyl.

We've just put carpet down after 5 years without anything on the stairs. It is noisy with just wood and we found that our older dogs were starting to lose their grip at times. They became much happier with carpet on the stairs - and it is quieter :)

Dorcus I have painted stairs, and they have lasted ages, about ten years !, and that's with Staffies thundering up and down them.
Rather than painting the treads, I painted the risers, with just a pattern on the edge of the treads.
I did varnish them, and to stop any slipping, used black tape designed for the purpose from Ikea.
But I think you can get non slip varnish now-a-days.

I have painted stairs with Stair Carpet Treads -  best of both worlds :-D

I believe it is Rhinofloor - we've had it down for eighteen months now and it still looks as good as new, and is amazingly easy to keep clean. :-)

Thanks Dill I really like the idea of the carpet treads, and I would imagine you could fit them quite easily yourself.

The vinyl we have in the kitchen and hallway is called safe tread or tread safe something like that. We went for the thickest. The kitchen stuff came from B & Q and the hallway we bought from a floor company but both very similar, we had a floorboard type and I am really pleased with it. Can hoover up or sweep the dog hair that collects in the corners, and a quick mop and it looks and smells fresh.
With five dogs, a leaky old lady and a puppy it has been a godsend.

I like those stair treads would have to do some work on m manky 1970's staircase though
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 27.05.14 14:23 UTC
love the stair treads--how do they fix on?
- By Dill [gb] Date 27.05.14 16:22 UTC Edited 27.05.14 16:25 UTC
They come with extra strong double sided tape :-)     Ours have been down a year with no problems :-)

I was a bit worried about the ones which just lay on top of the tread, so we got the ones that have a bit down over the front of the tread :-)    No lifting yet!

Fab--I will be getting rid of the once-beige carpet then!!!

As I was on a tight budget I chose the vinyl option a year ago and have never regretted it. Coupled with my steam cleaner the job's a good 'un!  So easy to keep clean and not slippy for the dogs like some ceramic tiles can be.  (My dream would still be non slip ceramic tiles with under floor heating, but that wasn't an option) This is a link to the vinyl I chose but not from this company http://www.carpetright.co.uk/goliath-granite-grege-vinyl-4.html
