I have a medium sized breed here can I say which? might help some help me....
I had her scanned at 28 days and we saw three on the scan but the lady said to come back in 10 days as size of pups were looking more like 21 days...so I did but I waited 2 weeks to be sure we'd get a clearer picture... we again saw three but again very small...now im wondering if because now shes supposedly 8 weeks from the tie (the only tie) shes absorbed pups cos her belly is non existant really....
is it normal that I see no movement and still at this point cannot hear any heartbeats with my Doppler?is it maybe because shes a little slender anyway and could be tucking them right up im frightened to go back and see nothing... im considering x ray but is it too late??I need to know as shes not acting pregnant at all....

Those who X-ray (mainly USA) do so a week before whelping, so now is the right time.  This enables them to count the skulls and spines as the bones become more calcified.

I've had a bitch x-rayed at this stage, and even I could point out spines etc with no difficulty at all.  And there is no harm to the bitch or whelps.

I wonder if perhaps you can't pick up heartbeats because she's carrying them high in the ribcage.  I once had a bitch that did this, and the day before she whelped I magically saw them moving down.  It was awesome to watch her belly making waves.

But you really need to find out just incase there is just one little one lurking in there somewhere. I had a bitch that just had a slip mating so I thought it unlikely that she had caught. A scan showed 2-3 pups at 4 weeks but like yours she barely put any weight on and I was convinced she had reabsorbed the pups. Her due date came and went and I really thought that was it then two days later she went into labour and produced one perfectly healthy little bitch puppy. With hindsight I should have xrayed then I would have been sure that there was a puppy there and could have been watching for signs in case she didn't start labour on her own which is likely with a singleton.

I've just had one miss to a slip mating, timings etc meant I wasn't around at the right time to scan. If she'd shown any sign at all I would have had her x-rayed, but I listened very hard with a stethescope towards the end of the time, her mother also never looked pregnant so scans and stethescope were my only clues then. We are now 8 days post due date and she's as slim, fit and active as ever - darn it! Oh well, at least we can do our rally trials this weekend!

Agree with this one - far more reliable although if this were mine, I'd wait until the due date and then get her x-rayed to see if she's empty.   Sadly it sounds as this could well be a reabsorb situation.

Sorry, forgot to copy - "Those who X-ray (mainly USA) do so a week before whelping, so now is the right time.  This enables them to count the skulls and spines as the bones become more calcified. "
