Topic Dog Boards / Health / ear infection?
- By joelol [gb] Date 21.05.14 21:12 UTC
Hi
I've got 3 border terriers one of which keeps getting an ear infection, we've been to the vets several times whereby ear drops and cleaner have been prescribed.
This tends to clear up then comes back again, also she has redness between her front toes which she licks, vets said some sort of infection? Cream prescribed and it has come back again.
I'm starting to think this maybe food related, yeast infection? Intolerance?
Anyone had a similar experience? Or can suggest a food to try?
Thanks

I've found thornit works great on my labs which had recurrent dodgy ears (not quite infected, not quite right)
It is a non-prescription powder that treats ear mites, also according to the Thornit leaflet they can also have the mites spread to between their toes which can be treated with a little of the powder. Google it for a better description than I can give but I think it's worth a try!

I agree.  I thought thornit before I read agilabs post.  I know one lady on CD who used to put some thornit in a plastic bag and dip the dogs paw in and shaking the bag to get a good distribution.  Then, if they scratch their ears, there is less chance of a reoccurrence.

I tried thornit powder early on(as it was recommended to me), can't remember much improvement I'm afraid
Thanks

We have a couple of (unrelated) border terriers on our list at work who have food allergies which result in ear infections; the owners have found that Burns Organic food helps them tremendously.

This could be the same infection.  Dog has an infection in the ear, dog scratches it, then licks the foot clean; then licks another foot and spreads it there.  Then licks the scratching foot again, then scratches the ear and spreads it back... round and round it goes.

Thornit is awesome stuff but if she's got this toe problem too, I would treat both her ears and all four feet as well.  Get a little bag - freezer/sandwich bags work well - put a pinch in it, hold it closed over the foot and shake.

I had to do that for my oldie, she had an ear infection that had been left for a years and a chin infection also, which turned out to be the same thing - she was reinfecting both repeatedly with the above cycle.  It was only when I twigged and treated her feet too that I finally stopped it all for good.

One of my terriers gets a hot ear and waxy, if she's not on the right food.  And it also affects her back feet too with the red fur.

I find getting the food right is the best way of sorting it.   Along with cleaning the ear with baby oil and the feet being soaked in baby oil then wiped.
After that I put a tiny amount of thornit in the ear and on the toes.

If it's just the ear flap, I clean the ear with baby oil, the rub Sudocreme over the ear flap.   But I still pay attention to the food, as it can be an early sign of food intolerance.

For my dogs the culprit is Maize/Corn.   They can tolerate a very little, but manufacturers often change dog foods without notice and corn seems to be cheaper than wheat at the moment, so it's going into more and more foods :(

Thanks all,

I've just been and bought some Wainwright's in trays(hypoallergenic) and try her on that.
Someone has recommended Caniston for between her toes?
