Topic Dog Boards / Health / Licking "bits"

Hi
My 5 year old dog is always licking his pen1s, so much so that his fur has turned brown around where he licks (he has a white coat).  He doesn't seem to be in any pain and there is no discharge, it doesn't look sore, he has no trouble toileting.
Do you think this is just a habit or something that I need to investigate?
His breath stinks as he's licking that area so often.
Any advice or info would be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks.

My white boy is fastidious about licking his bits clean. He too has brownish fur, he obviously prefers licking one testicle to other as one side is white the other is brown. I just try to keep the fur trimmed short so it doesn't show as much. Don't have a problem with bad breath though I would have thought that is caused by something else not the licking.

Is he licking his bum at any time ? My dogs breath stinks when she needs her anal glands emptying.

No, he doesn't lick his bottom, just his pen1s.  I groomed him last night so checked it over and it's not sore.  Perhaps it's just a habit, a horrible one at that!

Quite normal behaviour, but it sometimes helps to trim the hair a little from that region and make sure you help him to keep it clean.  The hair can get sticky and they find it irritating...

I wash my dogs paws and tummies after most walks so just include a quick willy wash as well.

As a general rule I discourage repetitive licking of any area.  Some dogs find licking so calming and soothing that they just can't seem to stop.  I'd recommend giving him something else to do :)

Thanks for all your replies.  Yes, I trimmed the hair short underneath last night and will give him a clean underneath after walks to see if that improves anything.
He is a licker anyway.  He is always licking the carpet/sofa/clothing so I think you're right, he finds it soothing in general.  But, perhaps, by giving him a clean down there after walks it will stop him licking himself.
Thanks.
