As far as I am aware a puppy/dog can only be registered with the KC by the breeder of said dog (& that both parents are registered with them). I know that a dog can also be registered on the KC's activity register by the owner of the dog. BUT during a conversation I was told that the KC have in the past registered dogs of unknown parentage so they will eligible to be shown competitively at open & Ch. shows, has anyone heard of this?

they will do this under special rules if it will aid the gene pool, so usually in breeds with low numbers.

I believe that several championship show judges assess the animal and determine that it is purebred.

This has most often happened with imported dogs from countries that do not have a kennel club, or from primitive stock like with the Basenji etc.

Dogs from unknown parentage can be registered with the kennel club, the cost I believe is at least £500

"-- Registration of dogs of unverified parentage is now permissible (the ancestry of the dog and how it originated may not be known but if it is judged to look like a particular breed it is admitted to the register in order to increase diversity.)

Daftest rule ever that, isn't it -if it has unknown parentage, how would anyone know if it was in fact closely related to a dog it ended up being mated to!! Hardly increasing gene pools.

One of the tests that has to be done is a DNA profile
