Used cardboard for first litter, too hard to keep clean. I have 2 whelping boxes from Steel City whelping and they are worth their weight in gold. Not cheap but have serviced about 6 litters and still going strong. Easy to clean and very serviceable, they should last a good few years yet.

Iv been looking at these and thinking of getting one is yours the with the lid on?

Don't have a lid but have a playpen that can be attached to the front when puppies start to move around. This doubles the size of the box. I then keep the box as the bed and put papers in the playpen so puppies automatically use them to toilet. I would definitely recommend them.

I've got a Steel city one too. I had it custom made to my preferred size....to use maximum space I wanted the pups in.

It's been great and the service was too. I ordered it late but it was with me a few days prior to welping.

I realise there are now many commercially made whelping boxes available, but when we were doing our occasional litters, we made one, based on a plan I'd seen.   It was made of wood, with a base (so up off the floor) and was 4 X 4 in size.  With 3 sides which were about 3 foot high with a pig rail round.   There was a low barrier in the front - bearing in mind this was a box for Bassets so mum had to be able to get in and out (bags and all) with comparative ease.   We used this part until the puppies were about 3 weeks and up and moving around.  At which point we added a second 4 X 4 section, no pig rail.   The front of the original section was removed, and the front was the samd 3 foot height, with a hinged door.

It could all be disassembled for packing away.    We also had a gallows up the original end, for the brood lamp.

Is wood easy to clean?

Yes we have that white stuff that wardrobes are made from it costs us £3 to make this one but no floor to it and will be use as ther bed area when older and i have a ellie boo large dog pen/whelping pen but id still love a plastic whelping box!

I did use the cardboard type just once. It was OK but not so easy to clean and stains would stay so didn't go down that route again.
Since had used a home made box from some melamine shop fittings with a floor made out of the polycarbonate material. That was great for cleaning and we made a cut out so Mum could easily get in and out and when we needed it extending the front panel was removed.
Last time I used the freedom pen and it worked well for us. When I wanted it extending made a larger pen of other panels.

Years ago I contacted factories making cardboard boxes.  Gave them the size that I was looking for, and asked what the cost would be, and how many I would need to buy.  Best decision I ever made.  Bear in mind that this was for a toy breed, so no idea how costings would go for a giant breed. 

I told them that I was looking for triple layer cardboard and that I would need it to be erected in a 4ft size puppy crate.  I've always whelped my bitches out of the whelping box, as that is what they have always shown a preference for.  I was able to almost close the box completely, and mum came and went as she pleased.  Mostly staying in with her pups.  The heaviest blood/mucous loss I ever had meant changing to a clean box on day 3.  Very hygienic, as I was able to burn the dirty boxes.  I purchased in packs of 10 flat packed boxes.  It worked out less than a fiver a box, and I never had a bitch that needed all 10.   I liked not having to find storage for a plastic whelping box.

Bearing in mind we had Vet Bed on a pretty thick layer of newspaper up the sleeping end, and then once the second half was added, again more thick newspaper down, with me regularly changing the whole lot, it was just a case of scrubbing the lot with a mild bleach solution before packing it away.   And my litters tended to be born into the better weather, so by the time they were really producing sig.output, they spent a few hours outside in the ex-pen.   That gave me a chance to do a good cleanup - removing damp newspaper and replace with clean.   It was heavy on newspaper so I'd scour the neighbourhood for months before we had a litter on the ground.    And up the sleeping end, the brood lamp was on which kept that area dry too.
