I have decided to treat myself to one of the above - preferably with scanner etc.  Can anyone recommend one?  I am finding it a minefield finding everything I would like without spending an absolute fortune.

Look at the price of the ink cartridges would be my first piece of advice. I'm in need of a new printer but have found the cost of the ink is far more than the price of the actual printer. I'll watch this thread with interest.

We got this one as a back up to business printer. Its not laser but the set up was easy and does everything we wanted. It mainly gets used as a copier and has the multi feed so you don't have to stand there swapping pages.
Don't know about ink yet but the factory cartridges have lasted longer than previous Hp printers we've had. I've bought the XL size which normally end up better value

Thanks for the link. I currently have a laser b&w printer and find the ink lasts for ages and doesn't dry out at all if left for a while whereas my colour  printer/scanner inksdry out so quickly, every time I want to use it I have to replace cartridges!
Will have another read through for this one.

We have a colour laser printer and wouldn't go back to inkjet cartridges for all the tea in china. It's a Dell printer, not wifi unfortunately, but that's fine for us, I suspect Dell do make wifi lasers. It does a very good job of printing colour, the inks lasts a long time unlike the inkjet a which seem to dry up if not used regularly and cost a fortune to replace.
I had an elderly b/w laser which just went on and on and on. I bought it second hand reconditioned and used it to print invoices and reports regularly for at least ten years. When we got the colour one I gave it away to a friend and it's still going strong many years later. Love lasers.

Thanks Jodi - think laser is they way to go.  Going to give b & w laser printer to grandchildren...

I was given a B&W laser printer about two years ago, from someone on Freecycle.
I love it. Unlike inkjet printers it never dries out, and a cartridge of toner (£16 ish) lasts for years. It keeps saying it needs a new drum (about £20) but has done so for at least 18 months, and is still going!

I would definitely look into a colour laser, although not having colour isn't an issue for me.

The laser cartridges look much cheaper than the ink cartridges so like you think that's probably the way to go.

Well, I have taken the plunge and bought an all-in-one wireless colour laser printer - and am over the moon with it.  I can work in comfort in the lounge on my laptop and collect the printed sheets later.  Looks like a good invstment....
