Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Why does she have the runs?

My girl is on day 55 and since starting worming on day 40 has had very loose stools. Trouble is, I also started putting a handful of puppy kibble in with her normal food around the same time. Now I don't know which is causing the runs. Would it be ok to stop the puppy food for a few days to see if things settle down? I am giving her a midday meal, which she wouldn't normally have, of various things, chicken, egg, mackeral etc, none of which have affected her bowels when she is not pregnant. She has her usual meal in the evening, but with added puppy kibble.

I've said it here many times before -I would never give puppy food to a pregnant or nursing bitch since it almost lost me one of mine. She got such an upset stomach that only got worse after birth that she ended up losing 50 % of her weight. Very scary. Never again. I now just give the same food the bitch always has, but add extra meals, and add chicken wings.

Wow, ok, well I can see why you wouldn't want to repeat that!! I assume you found that out by eliminating everything else.? That's where my confusion lies but now I feel I can stop giving her the puppy food to see what happens. I am sure I read somewhere that panacur can cause problems but my head is so full of confusion at the moment, I might have made it up lol Thank-you for that. Will stop the puppy food and report what happens.

Hi Lexy, well its what I have always done and my mentor advised that I did that too because puppy food is more nutritious and so would be of benefit to both mum and unborn pups. I must admit that two years ago, my girls had tummy problems too but it was quite mild. This time much more of a problem. I am totally happy to be re-taught. Its a relief to be honest. Thought I was doing the best for mum and pups but obviously not.

Never give puppy food either, just increase the amount of normal food. Mine are raw fed and the main difference I make is to give whole chickens as apposed to carcasses. Better meat content. They get aprox 1/3 more by 8 1/2 weeks.

Same here, for many years.  I have changed my bitches over to puppy food around the time that I start Panacur.  I up their food to what they want.  Always feed to appetite at this stage.
