Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Question to Bitch Owners

I have a 6½ month old bitch puppy (first bitch I have ever owned). When she comes into season, can I still take her out for walks at some time during those 3 weeks (lead only of course), or must I keep her indoors during those 3 weeks?

Thanks for any advice

I live in Bristol, and thanks to the Dog Warden service there are hardly ever any loose dogs on the streets. so yeas I do walk my in season bitches, keeping to pavement walking onlead. You have to be sensible, and cross the road when another dog walker is coming towards you, and a spray of antimate may help.

I can't say I have ever had a problem. In the first week, if there is no other dog in the playing field I will take them in there on a flexi lead, but after that I stick to the streets!!!

I have one half through now, and the other due any day, so my lot will have had nothing but road work for over a month :) As it is the younger two that come in season, the older ones don't mind not going to the park for Free running too much!

I walk mine on a flexi lead too but you do have to be prepared to leg it in the other direction if you see another dog coming that is unknown to you (other than those with entire males that is!)

We have six bitches and walk them all through their seasons, although like the other posters have said you have to be very vigalant and get ready to leg it in the other direction if another dog comes who is not on a lead.
Just be sensible and dont go where there are likely to be lots of other dogs.
