My oldie was given an injection of Metacam this morning with instructions not to feed her til tomorrow. AFAIK the liquid shouldn't be given on an empty stomach so is this different from the injectable does anyone know?

I have no idea why you have been told not to feed her ??? one of my own dogs had a metacam injection last week and I wasn't given this advice at all. Did they not mean no more metacam if you ususlly give it with food?

I always understood that both rymadil and metacam should not be given on an empty stomach.  Have a look at the instructions and then if they differ from vets advise I would check with vet for explanation.
Just re read I would think they meant don't give any more metacam until you feed her tomorrow due to the injection today.
Personally I would feed today as normal then start metacam with food tomorrow

She'd had 2 bouts of sickness in the morning the first included her breakfast. This new young vet said he'd give her an anti-inflammatory jab (metacam) and an anti sickness (which didn't happen). He seemed to be thinking pancreatitis which might be why he said starve. He took her off to get bloods and said not to feed her til this morning. Thinking about it later I have always given Metacam to other dogs with food. The bloods came back ok except one liver enzyme which was slightly raised. I gave her chicken last night anyway and she has perked up now (no more sickness) but I'll be asking the other vet when I see him.

Probably because it was an injection straight into the blood as opposed to by mouth and via the digestive system.

metacam stops inflammation which is needed for healing/ maintaining the stomach lining so it can still cause stomach damage whether injected or swallowed.

Yes. After all, lots of the injectable NSAID drugs are licensed to use perioperatively - and most dogs are fasted for surgery.
