Hi, it's been a while since I have been here but I do pop in to reade very so often and it's the first place I thought of in relation to this query.

For those who don't remember or know me, I have an 11 year old neutered staffy bitch and a 5 year old entire rottie male.  I have noticed this week that my boy has been marking up the toilets in the house which is a bit weird.

My partner saw him do it one day when he was in the bathroom having a pee and big boy walked in and cocked his leg up the toilet while my partner was having a pee.  the rott boy also shows interest add tries to have a sniff on other occasions when my partner has been in the bathroom.  I know we should shut the doors when Using the bathroom but it doesn't always happen.

I then noticed what I thought were urine stains on the bathroom I use (we have ensuites in every room so pretty much have our 'own' bathrooms that we use) and spotted them on another toilet too so am pretty sure that he is marking in the bathrooms.

To prevent it I am going to ensure the doors are shut and there are no canine visitors when a human is using the bathroom but any idea why he would be doing this?  Any insight welcome.

Obviously someone 'sprinkled while they tinkled' and it makes no odds to the dog that it is human male urine he can smell, he still wants to mark over it like any self respecting male LOL :)

As Brainless says, testosterone and other interesting smells in your partner's wee will be recognisable to your dog. For the same reason many dogs, given the chance, like to give humans a crotch inspection. What is of interest to me is why he has started now. Perhaps it is a matter of him reaching full maturity or, more likely, perhaps he smells some subtle difference in your partner's wee. Has your partner been on medication? Have you had a strange man in the house using your loo? Sometimes it only need be a few incidents triggered by something different/new in the environment and thereafter it just becomes a learned behaviour. I would thoroughly clean the areas around the loos and wipe over with surgical spirit and bar access to your dog from now on.

I would also suggest your partner have a health check for UTI etc.  Changing behaviour, scent related, can be dogs sensing some change in health.

Too right!   And the suggestion re a new medical condition, in your male humans, is worth considering?

Is your partner drinking enough water? If you find there is no medical change after visiting your GP, try and get him to drink more to help dilute his urine. Hopefully the concentration of smell will lessen and help alongside the cleaning and door closing. Fingers crossed he's medically cleared.

Toilets have been scrubbed and wiped over with deodoriser.  I don't think there are any health problems lingering but my partner doesn't drink much. In down pints of juice every day where he is more likely to have cups of tea so that could be it.

Thanks for the input.  Fingers crossed for no more incidents.
