Topic Dog Boards / General / North Devon - dog friendly

We've been here a few times now and have always found lots of dog friendly beaches etc. Well isn't it great to know that things are improving even more. Had a great few days and our terrier has been made so welcome. A great cafe in Lynton, I think called Lacey's, a notice on the door saying 'dogs welcome, children on leads'!. Pretty little place and very friendly. Yesterday in Appledore we discovered 'Susie's Tea Rooms'. He was welcome indoors and out in the beautiful tiered garden. Today we ended up in Bude in a quite basic looking place called 'Butter Bun'. Well what a delight it was. It's just a sandwich shop, takeaway or eat in but so friendly. The two ladies came over to meet our lad, gave him plenty of fuss and a load of chicken !. The food we had turned out to be really very good and I'd recommend it highly. So anyway, just thought I'd pass these on to anybody heading to North Devon soon.

Sounds like you had a very enjoyable break.

Do you have any suggestions of a dog friendly B&B in the area? have been looking for somewhere to book for two nights with elderly mother & the dogs. Needs to be on the ground floor and disabled accessible.

Also need to add.... low to medium price as mum is a pensioner and I am her carer, and twin beds in the room.

I'm so glad you had such a great experience in BUDE.   My current 'home-town'.    Bude is a very dog-friendly place, and up in the town, you see loads of different breeds - I noticed two Wolfhounds today.... and how many times do you see one, never mind two!!

Water bowls are out all over town - but be aware, once the season begins it changes, Crooklets is out of bounds for dogs - Summerleaze has a dogs on lead requirement between certain hours.   http://www.visitbude.info/things-to-do/bude-beaches

ps   Bude is in N.Cornwall!!!

I wasn't able to edit this, but just to say PLEASE PICK UP after your dogs if you all visit our beautiful area.   The mess left along the cliffs by incomers is just shocking - to the point I won't take our two up there.    And please make sure your dogs are utd with their boosters - the number of visitors we get can bring infection down here ..........

Yes I know it's in Cornwall, we went to Padstow and Rock earlier in the week as well - where we stay is very accessible. As for picking up after dogs, that goes for everywhere, beautiful or not.

I'm really sorry I don't know of any b&b's - if nobody can help on here try emailing a local tourist info centre for where you want to visit as they can be really helpful.

Have a look at this one      http://www.thedevonlonghouse.co.uk/dog_friendly/

Saunton Sands is an easy to access beach we use a lot. It is zoned now,  as is Woolacombe  but the free running dog bit is easier to get on at  Saunton.

Sorry just noticed you need disabled access- don't think they have a ground floor room.

Oh that looks lovely thanks - their self-catering cottage is reasonably priced and on the ground floor. (I'd prefer someone else to cook & feed me for a change though!). :)

I've been trawling the dog-friendly listings but it seems to be hard to find what I want, so I do appreciate a recommendation.

I have found when looking for dog friendly B&B/ self caters, that it is not always the answer to look at just ones who say dogs welcome. I sometimes email one that doesn't say it and explain what I have etc and have struck lucky.

Best of luck in finding somewhere for well deserved break.

Most definitely worth it.  I was having a look at places that took dogs, and found that a lot meant ONE dog, and no bigger than a Toy Poodle!

I had not been on holiday since 1976, and this was in 2003.  I sent an email to the Torquay Tourist Board as I had been looking at North Devon with no luck.  As I just needed to get away after losing Dad I didn't care where it was really.  The people helping at Torquay, I can't praise enough.  They did some delving and said there was a bungalow at Marldon.  Country area only 3 miles from Paignton.  The guy would not accept children, only animals.  One couple went every year and took their 2 parrots!

I took 2 Bearded Collies, one terrier cross and a Toy Poodle.  I had the time of my life, and the dogs were really good.  We found lots of hidden coves and my old blind terrier even enjoyed paddling in the rock pools.  The owner came to see how we were doing, and I had just returned after a day out at Slapton Sands.  I was unloading the car when he arrived and he wanted to know why the dogs were waiting in the down position when they could have run off, as there was no gate on the driveway.   I just smiled and said, why would they want to leave me?

It was this break that made me buy the static.  Having a bolthole really suits me, and I felt that I deserved it since I hadn't had a holiday in 27 years.  :-)

I have two, and they both *look* like - cough - "Alsatians".... even though they are smaller.... and aren't ;)
So I don't fancy my chances with negotiation!

One year I was going up to the highlands to stay with friends in a cottage, I needed a B&B for an overnight stop. After trying to find one that would take three hairy retrievers, not just one dog, I gave up and contacted a few that didn't say NO Dogs (but didn't say they did!) A lovely lady with a beautiful Edwardian home in Cannock, didn't normally accept dogs but kindly allowed me the small suite she kept for her visiting mum. Ground floor, easy access to a lovely garden and reasonable price!

It is true to say if you don't ask you don't get! :)

I found this when, some years ago now, I was trying to find somewhere in the Lakes.   I know sometimes people with dogs 'abuse' (and this goes for rental accommodation too) but in the end, with the Lakes search, I gave up.

I tend to find Wales generally tends to appear to be more open to people with dogs.   I also get the impression those people we do see here with dogs, are using their own caravans!!   But they'd still need a site that allows dogs.

have a look at Devon dogs they train dogs and run courses and workshop but also have places to stay that are dog friendly. NOt sure if they are in exactly the right part of Devon though

I have a small caravan and most of the main club sites welcome dogs with no restrictions on number. Many private sites do
allow dogs but usually with certain restrictions. It is becoming more difficult to holiday with dogs as the years go by- very sad. I like to use CL's, small 5 van sites but having the dogs does restrict the choice available now.
