Topic Dog Boards / Health / wound not healing
- By Noora Date 30.04.14 11:29 UTC
My dog had a ruptured anal gland about 1.5 months ago.
The gland has healed but the exit hole remains.
She has had antibiotics, been off antibiotics no difference to the hole (did not get worse when off antibiotics).
The vet cut the edges and stabled it(thinking scar tissue had formed to the edges), it started to heal but the stable let go and the hole remains and even the bit that healed has re-opened.
The vet has now prescribed anti-fungal medicine to try as antibiotics did nothing but has admitted it is the first case where he has not managed to heal the exit hole.

The hole is size of a small pea, round and tidy.
Has little discharge but not massive amounts.
Does not bother the dog, except she seems little slow in having a poop so I think it is little sore.
Would anybody have has similar (even if different site) and used something successfully as my vet has admitted being little lost with this.
Natural remedies or vet stuff.

Try Intra-Site gel, for humans, available without prescription, or there is a vet version available from your vet called Vetalintex. It heals wounds from the inside out (as opposed to the wound scabbing over first), and you squeeze the gel into the wound. It has saved the life of two of my dogs that had wounds that would not heal in any other way, and it healed up a bitch who had mastitis with an abscess that burst leaving a golf ball sized hole.

I too would recommend the gel that Goldmali mentioned. I used it on my GR who had a wound site that wouldn't heal following the removal of a small tumour. It was brilliant and the wound started to heal within days of starting the use of the gel.

Manuka Honey applied topically worked for my dog that had the same problem. Expensive though as you have to use the highest strength you can get 25+. I have a friend who is a district nurse who gave me some she said it should be  pharmaceutical manuka ideally......

How often should I apply the intra-site gel? few times a day?
Do I wash it off and apply new stuff each time?

I thought of manuka-honey but thought it might pull her attention to it and start her licking it. She is not licking it at the moment.
I suppose with lampshade I could try honey, I will try anything as this needs to be healed!

Salt water washes are the best way to slough off old infected tissue and allow growth of clean tissue from within.

Cheapest way is to buy *sterile saline* sold for contact lens wearers.

Comes with a nozzle for easy direction.

Couple of times a day for the gel and just apply new unless it looks dirty and in need of a wash.

Ah yes my dog was shih tzu too wide around the girth and short of neck to reach. I would go with what the pros have suggested.
