Does anybody know anything about birds!? There is a young pidgeon in our garden, he has been sitting under a tree on the soil all day. I saw two older pidgeons, presumabely the parents come down to him and nudge him, but he couldn't fly away. I'm trying not to disturb him and have just watched from the window, but the parents haven't been back to him and he is still sitting there. Should I leave him? He is quite big but looks young, has fluffy feathers. He walks about, but doesn't seem to be able to fly, he doesn't look injured.I have no idea about birds! I think i should leave him and hope his parents come back, but I don't want to find a dead bird tomorrow morning :( Any suggestions? (Sorry this is a non dog topic)

If he is ill then he will be cat-food by tomorrow, & if he is ill then leave well alone as Pigeons carry frounce amongst other things. if it were me i would knock him on the head, but I guess thats not everyones opinion!!!

I heard they were flying rats:o I'd knock it one too- either that or I'd have blood on my hands anyway from picking it up off the kitchen floor after my tom cat had got it! The council here are so sick of them that they're considering on the spot fines to anyone caught feeding them in the Town centre.

If it's now dark where you are, i would say that they won't come back tonight. If he can't fly there must be something up. I'm sure it's the wrong time of year for fledglings. I probably would be tempted to go and get him. I know you shouldn't disturb wildlife but i would just worry about him all night. A cat or fox could come along and if he can't fly then he's had it.
He hasn't got a ring on has he? I'm sure you would have mentioned this if he had.
Sorry i can't be more helpful, i haven't really got much experience of birds, apart from the ones i've picked up that have been injured, or racing pigeons that have been lost.

It's just as well that there are caring people in the world that believe everything should be given a chance.

Are there any local wildlife rescue people near you? As they would be worth ringing for advice. I rescued a pigeon about 6 years ago now, basically it was just hungry and cold, and took it to the local group who sorted it out.

Arent there any bird info sites? perhaps you could do a search on google for help.
I would have him in a shoe box now trying to do something poor bird.
Thing is though if he is very ill he is best put out of his misery as cats will pull him to bits hard I know I couldnt do it .

found this on google. sorry cant do links .........myweb.tiscali.co.uk/wildlife21237/links.html - 5k -

He hasn't got a ring on his foot. It doesn't really look ill, but i guess it should be able to fly because it's fairly big but obviously young. I just don't want to move it becasue i've seen the parent birds trying to get it, and if I disturb it then they probably won't come back. I'll check on it again in a little while, it's dark and raining :( It is quite sheltered where it is, between two raised flower beds/rockery+under a tree, and well hidden from cats. I'll post later, thanks.
