My sons husky this evening has had a fluke accident ,he jumped out of patio doors but hit a two foot wall on his front going down ,He now has little feeling in his rear legs ,rushed him to our vets who refered him to vets college,he is sedated so in no pain but they now want to do a MRI scan tomorrow, they cannot be sure what has happened ,disc, fracture, seems to have compromised his spinal cord somewhat as he has only a little feeling in his rear paws.
Please can anyone give me some hope that this will not be a permenate(sp) thing,My son is on holiday abroad & his sister was dog sitting so she is beside herself as she blames herself, also he is not insured so going to be very expensive .not that comes into it at all.Need all positive vibes please .

A friend of mine had a Shetland Sheepdog fall over 20 feet from a seaside promenade onto rocks below. He lost the use of his legs but could still wag his tail. Before the days of MRI he made an almost complete recovery & his very slight movement  problem was only noticeable if you knew about his accident, he lived a long & normal life afterwards & he wasn't young when the accident happened.

Everything crossed for a happy outcome

Not the same scenario I know, but a setter of mine seriously banged her tail and couldn't move it. I was convinced it was broken by the way it was just hanging down.  Vet's examination showed it was severely bruised and within a week or so she was back to normal.  Sending very positive vibes to you.

ps  Forgot to say don't forget the arnica pillules every 2 hours to help any bruising.

UPDATE, Max has responded overnight to cage rest & pain meds, vet thinks it was a blood shortage to spinal cord for a short time .no mri needed at this stage, left leg is normal right has improved . He may never be 100% but he is still with us & should have a good quaility of life ,so panic over .

Super news, I would still give him Arnica
- By codysholasmum [gb] Date 26.04.14 17:02 UTC
He will be staying in the vets for a few days as he wonts to keep a eye on him ,is the arnica to be rubbed in or taken oraly ?.

Sounds similar to what happened to my mum's boy (whilst I was looking after him so I know how that feels!!). He ran around my van then came out the other side on two legs, dragging his back legs. He had a spinal embolism, and after some physiotherapy and hydrotherapy has made a full recovery, though it was slow going.

A dog I sometimes look after also had a similar problem where apparently she rushed up concrete steps and hit her chest on the steps. She still has some movement problems in her back end, but she also hasn't had the intensive aftercare that my mum's boy has.

But if he has responded well to treatment so far I hope you can be cautiously optimistic :) Hope he's back home and bounding around soon!

Good news. Hopefully you may even get a full recovery.

Have spoken to the vet daily, as he dosent want Max excited by visit's. Just had a message from one of his assistants saying that they are very pleased on his progress,& he should be able to be released in 3-5 days,
Would you leave him in that long, would I be within my rights to discharge him earlier, its my sons dog & he is on holiday abroad,I am covering the cost of this and as a OAP dont need excess charges to cage rest a dog that I could do at home for another 3 to 5 days .I will speak to vet to find out if he is on meds ie sedation ,painkillers, if tablet form I could do that ,seems a bit silly paying for him to stay in vets college if its just rest he needs .What would you do if it was your dog ?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 27.04.14 13:48 UTC
At this early stage I would force myself to leave him there, because I know that, if he was my dog, I wouldn't be able to be firm enough - because I'd be so emotionally attached - to make him rest. I'm a softy and not medically trained, and I'm sure I'd accidentally allow him to do too much and possibly make him worse.
- By Nikita [gb] Date 27.04.14 15:01 UTC
I would find out exactly why they want to keep him in - is it purely for rest or is it for observation, do they think a car journey home might do damage (if he tries to lean into corners etc)?  If it's purely for rest I would have him home but I know I can be strict enough!  You just have to remind yourself that it's in his best interests and not be drawn in by the woeface :-P

Think I would leave him for another couple of days and go with what the vet says maybe he won't need to stay in for as long as 5 days hope all goes well for you all.

If money is a concern (and please rest assured that you will not be alone in worrying about the costs involved)- I would have an honest and frank discussion with the Vet and put your worries to them. Most Vets are very helpful, so don't be worried about calling a spade a spade. It is best that all concerned know the score and what is the best course of action for all concerned :)

Have spoken to the vet concerned, He is only waiting for Max to pee on his own ,then he can come home. Needs some excersise/physio on right leg which he is happy to be done at home Thank you all for you replys, you have made a horrible experience bearable with your good wishs for Max ,I told him that money is in short supply so need him out asap & he was very understanding.xx

My girl is recovering from spinal injury at the moment. She's at home on cage rest and Previcox. Its 2 weeks and she's doing well. Feeling has returned to her back legs and she's walking tho I think there is a very slight drag coz I can here her claws on kitchen floor. Mind you it may have always been like that and I never noticed.
- By codysholasmum [gb] Date 01.05.14 17:24 UTC
Excuse me asking, but what was the injury your dog had,as Max is kuckleing on his right leg, sometimes he seems to stand right but once walking ,I am useing a lifting harness ,he seems to always end up with his paw folding under him ,its not yet a week so pehaphs am expecting to much .
- By Tommee Date 01.05.14 17:29 UTC
Sounds more like Degenerative Myelopathy than an injury
- By codysholasmum [gb] Date 01.05.14 17:38 UTC
No not D.M. have had shepherds with that ,disc damaged spinal cord ,was paralyised (sp) in both legs on first vets exam ,now has good use in left leg, right is the problem , physio 3 times a day ,carpofen is the only meds that he is on ,which is for inflammation .
Max is a 3 year old Husky ,no sign of a problem until he hit the wall

Have a look at acupuncture and if you can get it, that within a really good physio/rehab clinic.  Three of mine have slipped discs alongside other problems and acupuncture is making a big difference.
- By codysholasmum [gb] Date 02.05.14 09:24 UTC
Thanks ,I am waiting for physio to call me back to discuss options will run acupunture past her ,

Have a look at acupuncture and if you can get it,

I'd gone there as I was reading all this.   I had two sessions with my Basset after his prem.closure of the growth plates, ulna both sides, left him lame as a puppy.   I'm not 100% certain this helped him but it clearly didn't do any harm and he tolerated it well ..... he dozed off standing up!!   I'm not normally into alternative therapy, but in is case, was prepared to try everything available to help him.

I'd also, depending on the advice of your vet team, investigate whether hydrotherapy might be relevant for your dog.   This kind of exercise certainly prevents undue strain on joints etc. while keeping up the muscle-tone.

Hi, I shouldn't have spoken that my girl was recovering well. I had a visitor yesterday and she went potty in her cage, this morning she was weak and wobbly on back legs again. Back to vet again who didn't appear too concerned. Said she's obviously niggled it, so she now to have zylkene to keep her calm. Hope it works.
I hope your dog recovers well.
- By Nikita [gb] Date 02.05.14 17:31 UTC
Yes, hydrotherapy can be useful BUT be careful: swimming might do much more harm than good depending on the problem (it did for River who has a prolapse pressing upwards, the position she was in swimming was pushing against the prolapse).  Conversely, I know someone who's dog was paralysed after he flipped over chasing a ball - his disc went the other way apparently, and swimming helped him to walk again.  Underwater treadmilling is another option though - may be doing that with Paige in the near future for her back.
- By codysholasmum [gb] Date 02.05.14 22:58 UTC
The treadmill hydrotherapy is the one recommended by our physio ,spoke to her today, will be disscusing this over weekend, trouble is my son cannot pay for it & dog is not insured so looks like bank of mum & dad again. I think i am expecting to much to soon,  Hate seeing him like this .Baby steps
