My 5 month old pup has been in the vets for a week now with poisoning (she scavenged what we think were paracetamol when on a walk)
Blood results showed significant damage to the liver and I was warned 48hrs ago that it was very likely she wouldn't survive the next 24hours...
Well she is still here and fighting and is well enough in herself to come home later today, we are just awaiting the final blood results to see how badly damaged the liver is or whether it is rejuvenating. Whichever, I have been warned that there will be lasting damage as the liver just cannot repair itself enough.

I may be getting ahead of myself and I obviously will not put quantity over quality when it comes to her, but I'm just wondering if anyone has ever had a dog with liver disease? What sort of food is most suitable and any extra supplements that may be beneficial? (I have read milk thistle can help?) anything else?

The kind of diet your girl may need would be determined by the type of damage to the liver and how bad it is ;)   Your vet could probably advise you about this ;)   Or once you know exactly what the damage is, you will be able to find out more and give her an appropriate diet.

As I understood it, if the damage does not stop the liver functioning it will eventually repair itself assuming that whatever caused the damage is no longer damaging it.

So it either gets better or not.  Ass eh appears to be improving, then I don't understand why this would not continue, unless they mean that as a growing pup as opposed to an adult her development will outstrip the ability of the repair to keep pace???

I didn't word it well... The levels decreasing are those that are being secreted due to toxins, we don't know how much of the liver is functioning unless a biopsy is done, but we do know that it is not working very effectively as the levels are only decreasing slowly, and latest results show no improvement with the anaemia and she is also passing blood again.
From what I understand, some of the liver can repair but some can be badly damaged and therefore become scar tissue, in which case there is nothing that can be done.

Hi Drover,  It may help to look at sites which give information about diets for dogs with liver shunts.  I know it is not the same problem that you have but you talk of toxins and I understand that diet is really important in decreasing the amount of toxins produced.

I have a friend with a setter with a liver shunt and she is thriving on a special diet.  Let me know if you would like more information and I will check with her
what was recommended by her vet.

My old lab has liver damage she had arthritis as a puppy so she's been on a lot of different pain killers over the years she had a liver biopsy 2 years ago she was put on destolit  tablets and she's still here expensive but they work for her.
