Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Progesterone levels, how quickly can they rise
- By suejaw Date 03.04.14 23:21 UTC
I had my girl tested yesterday and she was a 1, advised to retest on Monday, thing is he really is flagging and wanting my male, this won't happen as they are different breeds.. Question is can levels rapidly rise in a day? I'm wondering whether I should get another test done at the weekend or is waiting until Monday sufficient?

Anyone?

http://www.champdogsforum.co.uk/board/topic/142725.html

our last progesterones went up very fast.
It was very difficult to determine when the eggs should be ready as Friday not ovulated, Monday eggs going over if reading the levels...
But they say takes eggs 24-48 to mature so should not be going over by Monday....
No litter resulted but only had a slip mating. it was a bit of a funny season and she was not flagging like mad to our other girls either, which she usually does...

I asked some questions about it at the time but nobody seemed to have answers...

Interesting to see this post as going through something similar.

We were going to use fresh semen and do an ai- so were told to look wait till levels were at 30 .

24.2   0.6
31.3   8.3
2.4     24.3!
We didn't get the 24.3
Result until the next day about 5pm - by which time the chilled semen wasn't an option - so dashed 500 for a live cover .... No more bloods taken but vaginal smear and lack of interest on 4.4 suggest it's too late.

So it would appear from 2-4 my girl jumped from 24.3 to over 60! :-(

I'm having fun as well. :)

Monday (day 7), 4.4 nmol/L
Thursday (day 10), 4.7 nmol/L

I would have thought there would have been a bit more of an increase from Monday to Thursday.

Of course we've now got a weekend in between to make life difficult. Next test will have to be Monday, but if she looks ready before will pay the stud dog a visit.

:-( that is a slow increase - and always at the bloody weekend!

I thought we would be smack on with timings - however they smeared her when we arrived and said eggs looked like they had gone over :-(

Did another one today and not ready for mating at this time, again retest Monday!!

They are all different, having tested my girls ( all related ) I know they all seem to follow a slow burn pattern and are rarely ready before day 15. The charts show the * typical * pattern but individuals can vary significantly. Sequential frequent testing is the only wY of knowing exactly what is happening, in non typical bitches it may be prudent to ignore advice and test daily once bitches progesterones are hovering just under ovulation levels

I wish they would invent a way of testing from saliva, or even wee (though still a faff to get a sample), no way would I want to have blood drawn from my girls more than once or twice in a short space of time.

Only did [progesterone testing once on Jozi and she found it thoroughly unpleasant and put her off vet visits in as much as she no longer actively enjoyed them and wanted out ASAP if we did need to see them.

had bloods drawn fro DNA test at 4 months from both legs on Inka, and had to sedate when we did Rabies titre draw, as she was not happy, and would not stay still at all to have it done at 18 months.

Omg, my girl took one look at my male this morning and threw her tail to the side... Lol

That wont be happening, never seen her quite like this before, im calling her my wanton princess

I was told by an excellent repro vet that it doesn't matter what happens to the levels once you have gone past ovulation.  She said that basically the important bit was to pinpoint the LH surge and then the ovulation day.  Matings should then be done 2 days later when the eggs are ripe and ready for fertilisation.  I also wish there was a better way to be able to test than taking bloods.

Me too :-(

Hoping we made it in time but I fear the eggs may have been aged a dying

I wish I knew what was going on with my girl. Such a small rise in 4 days and now a weekend in between. She's hardly bleeding at all now, although she is meticulous about keeping herself clean. I think I'm going to get the bloods taken in the morning (Monday - day 15) and then pay a visit to the stud anyway.
