I have fed my standard poodle Poppy and miniature poodle Button raw food since birth, they are both now in pup, do they need anything else other than the chicken wings and beef chunks that they normally have?

Mine are all fed raw, including a bitch that has recently had a litter.

The only thing I would say is that they need a wider variety of raw food if they literally only get chicken wings and beef chunks.

So carry on with their current diet but add some offal, fish, yoghurt etc.

Hi

I have just started raw feeding my Labradors, (they were fed on Canagan before). My bitch is pregnant and I would love some advice on % to normal weight (30kg-lean) she should be getting in food and how this changes through the stages of her pregnancy.
She is currently at 5.5weeks and having 3 X 454g in 3 meals, constituting of muscle meat - beef or lamb or chicken and green tripe. She is having raw eggs and chicken carcass twice a week as well as necks and wings. I have meat and offal packs and heart - having these a few times a week.

She has had her scan and should be expecting a litter of 9+. Any advice on raw feeding puppies and broaching the topic with prospective puppy parents will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I can't help with percentages I'm afraid as I feed by eye.  I have a medium sized gundog, my heaviest would be about 25kg, and they get on average a chicken piece, pound of mince, a little offal and maybe half a mackerel a day.

From 6 weeks of pregnancy I started increasing her food until at 7 to 8 weeks she was eating as much as she could eat.  She was basically having about 8 small meals a day.  For my bitch this dropped right off a couple of days before she whelped.  Also I didn't give her any bones at all the last 2 to 3 weeks before whelping.

Once she had whelped she was back onto as much as she could eat, and lots of bones.  She was probably on at least six times her usual amount of food.  I fed her by hand in her whelping crate, and I had to bash up the bones into small pieces.  I hand fed for between 2 to 3 weeks.  I also gave her goats milk or powdered ewe milk.

She had a litter of 8, and the pups are 5 weeks old and have been starting to eat for a week.  I started with chicken mince, cottage cheese and scrambled eggs.  The past few days they have been having chicken wings which are smashed up.

With regards to my puppies new owners, they all know that I feed raw, and that I will be sending each pup with a weeks amount of raw - but I certainly wouldn't try and insist that they continue with raw.

Good luck and enjoy!

To the op if you raw feed  please increase the types of proteins you are giving. the essence if raw deeding is overall balabce vy feeding as much variety as possible includin offal muscle meat bone and fish. If you are only feeding chicken and beef for longterm health they need more variety

Thank you so much for your reply, its a bit daunting going in blind, but so much better than trying to get the amounts of food needed in dry biscuits!
I shall cut the bone out now and increase feeding as I am, with more fish included.

I definitely wont be pushing raw feeding on to new parents, but have lots of information on it and on the better dry foods to include in their puppy packs :)

Hi! I don't know whether you are on FaceBook but there are a number of great Raw Feeding groups on there with files of useful information and knowledgeable people to answer queries. I particularly like: 'Raw Feeding UK' and 'Rawsome and holistic!'. Good luck :)
