Hazel arrived here with Parvo, Kennel Cough, Mange and secondary skin infection. It is all under control now, BUT the skin on her legs is very thin and it splits open and bleeds, even when she is not moving much. Any idea what I could do/give/put on? I am at my wits end.

I've had excellent results with Oil of Evening Primrose for keeping skin problems clear.
I'd be inclined to use a moisturiser like E45 cream to keep the skin supple and preventing it drying and splitting.
Poor thing :(
Hope she feels better soon.

Try soaking some bandages in honey and camomille tea and leaving them overnight (assuming she'll keep them on!!).
It's really good and very gentle.

The thing is, her skin isn't dry or brittle, it is velvety smooth, it just cracks open :(. I think a moisturiser (sp) would make it worse?

Hi Taylor, have a look at the sulpher remedy on the thread mange or I can send you it if you like.
Christine, Spain.
PS. Vit E is good for the skin & Vit C is a good immune booster as well as Spirulina. It`ll take her system some time to get aver all that lot, poor thing.

Hi, she is on that already. It's just her skin which is bothering her (and me for that matter).

Hi Taylor, just sent you the sulphur treatment, it`s good for all kinds of skin probs, weeping sores etc. Don`t know what else to suggest. Wait a mo, what about pure aloe vera??? Have heard very good reports about that as well.

I use surgical spirit for toughening up my dogs paws when they are soft and tender - don't see why it shouldn't have the same effect on skin (as long as its not dabbed on a broken bit!).
Also Witch Hazel might be an idea!

Taylor you can also pierce the vitE capsule & smear it on the sores, as well as giving it internally, promotes healing of the outside as well. Am looking for something I read in the last few days about rhubarb. The tannin in it is good for sores as well, helps them heal quickly. If I find it I`ll pass it on to you. These are for the outside.

You could try Bob Grass's skin Cure - its based on sulphur and heals most blemishes very quickly. I have aloe vera plants and find the jelly/juice inside the leavers is excellent for healing bites/scratches/scrapes/burns.

i have to ask ... did she come from a breeder?

Well unless the stork brought her, or she was found in a Cabbage Patch, or from a feral litter, then someone bred her, and ipso fact came from a breeder. :D
I am not being picky here, but I always wonder what people mean by I'm not a breeder, or oh the people weren't breeders, as surely iof you have a bitch that has a litter of puppies, then you are their breeder!?
The implication sometimes seems to be that as it was a one off litter from flossie, somehow they don't have to have done health tests, used a good dog, or be responsible for the puppies after they home/sell them!

I actually meant as opposed to a rescue centre :-) If it were from a breeder then she should report them to the RSPCA.

But a Rescue centre should not be releasing a pup in poor health, as I understood it any health issues have to be dealt with before pups/dogs are adopted out. I see what you mean though, but looks like it is someone just producing pups with little care.

Hi taylor dont have a magic remedy however yellow petroleum jelly not the white stuff iss very good, also the alo cactus as someone else mentioned is very soothing, and watch any creams you use dont have steroids in them as this makes the skin very thin.
Hope you get it sorted. all the best Mick

Thank you all, I am trying the Aloe and Mr. Murphy's Jelly and it seems to work. :)
Sarahctaylor: I run a bull breed sanctuary that's why Hazel ended up with me. Her story is on my website and pics as well.
