Hi Dawn,
Is your Mal a puppy? If he is, I would be inclined to concentrate all my efforts on him before getting another pup, what I mean is, I have been told that Malamutes are strong willed dogs that are not easy to train, especially males, and I think you would find it very difficult to train a Mal pup and another pup together, as they would bond to each other and take no interest in you. You would really be best to wait until your dog is at least a year old before getting another puppy. Then you would have to get a bitch pup as male Mals dislike other male dogs and have a reputation for fighting.
I know the idea of two pups playing together is very appealing but believe me, you will not find it easy to train your Mal as it is on his own! They are gorgeous but very wilful and dominant dogs.

Hi Dawn,
I totally agree with Bear. Please don't rush into buying another Mal until your pup is at least a year old (I believe he must only be about eleven or twelve weeks old?). He's obviously very cute and cuddly (and small and easy to handle!) at the moment but things will be very different in a few months time. Please give yourselves time to get to know your pup (and the breed) properly, one week is no time at all.
I urge you to thoroughly read through the info I sent you again, several times preferably, but ignore all the positives this time.
It's always advised that a Mal should not be housed with another dog of the same sex, so when you do eventually get another pup it will need to be a bitch - and life will obviously be much easier if one, or both, are neutered.
Take the time to enjoy your pup on his own and allow yourselves to concentrate on producing a well rounded sociable adult Mal that will be a pleasure to live with. When you've done that, if you're mad enough, you can then do it all over again :)
Regards
Jacquie (Myatuk Alaskan Malamutes).

Actually I would go even further and suggest you wait til your pup is 3 years old. It takes at least two years for any pup to grow up and be reasonably reliable in its training, so that you can concentrate your efforts on the new pup without having your wqork undone by the older dog. I have a two year old Elkhound bitch (and her mother, grandmother, and greatgrandmother) and I certainly wouldn't consider keeping another yet, as she still keeps me on my toes re training!
