my pups are 3 days old now and as soon as the first live one was born i noticed his tail was not at all right.... so i have never came across this personally although have heard and read about it... and i have never heard of it being so sever, it looks as though someone took the tip of his tail then began to roll it under, its completely curled under once. it does not straighten. when my pups were 1 day told and we seen the vet because some placentas were still inside my bitch, he didnt really notice the tail so i told him... and he said he wants to do some xrays on his back in a couple of weeks to ensure the spine is not deformed! he said these things are usually genetic.
so then i began to think its my bitches first litter.... so called up the owner of my bitches mum... never had this problem, nobody else who bought her pups and bred them has had this problem. i called up the stud dog owner... never had this problem, her stud has been bred many times before, if she had of thought he had limber tail in his genes she would have had him nurtured.
so i have decided im keeping this pup because hes not going to sell... hes not show quality, so im keeping him as a pet and having him nurtured.
has anyone heard of limber tail being so sever? my vet says its usually looks like the tail is broken but hes never seen it curled right over like this but says he hasnt seen it that often anyways... so i thought id give it a go and ask on here if anyone has had a pup like this? i can take a picture and add if that would be helpful

For me, this isn't limber tail.  We get this in Bassets occasionally (usually happens just before a show, after being bathed!!).  It's often painful but not always - clearly mine do feel something but it's usually just an irritation.  The good news it is normally goes away within days.  It doesn't show in a newborn but we do get 'kinky tails' in Basset puppies.   Sometimes this can he helped by 'splinting', but this doesn't always work - in which case it's often kinder to take the tail off to the point of the kink.   I'd agree with your vet re checking the whole spine as the tail is only an extension of the spine.

Unless sit's linked t a spinal issue like haemivertebrae that you can get in breeds with screwtails like Bulldogs, occasionally this, kinked tail etc,  just happens.

I know a white GSD born with an extreme tail anomaly, only a stump of tail that was bent over down over her bottom.

At about 18 months she had it amputated as it was getting painful to sit on, but she had no spinal anomalies.

My breed and many other curly tailed breeds are born with straight tails, which curl later, so these breeds do not have the spinal issue that screwtails do.

I certainly see no reason this pup cannot be homed as a pet, on which such a cosmetic fault will have no bearing, and no reason for you to keep him, as surely you planned to keep a breeding/show quality pup to carry on your line with?

Yes I have had a pup like this. Now when I know what breed your pups are I'd say you got an absolutely HUGE litter (I've never even had 5 pups born in Papillons and they are bigger, my bitches between 3 and 4 kilos in weight) and so it may well simply be the pups were so crowded that the tail ended up getting squashed. Have seen it in cats as well where tail defects can be common but where I did not believe it would be genetic. This bitch of mine had 3 litters and only one pup like this BUT the other two litters were to different dogs. None of them from the litter with the pup with the odd tail were bred from themselves, all spayed. (Only bitches in the litter.) The pup was never x-rayed or anything and she competes very successfully in agility with her owner! She's 4 now.

there was 5 in the little but two were stillborn sadly. i do believe it may have been squished and could not grow properly... im not sure but my vet wants to do some xrays anyways so i will go ahead with the xrays to be safe.

I assume most of the litter would go purely for this purpose, and with the usual non breeding endorsements in place on all pups, and a tailored contract specifying it would not be lifted for this one, then I see no problem
