Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / breeding insurance?
- By Dill [gb] Date 11.03.14 22:46 UTC
I can remember discussions on breeding insurance (pregnancy cover etc)  and  that it was only available to those who had bred a certain number of litters.    Was this right?

Apparently, a friend's neighbour is going to have 'just the one litter' from their young  Boston Terrier bitch and will be taking out insurance to cover any problems.

Just confused as this is a first time breeder, a brachycephalic breed, and of course they have no experience of whelping and rearing pups.

Don't you just love these money-making bybs  :-(

So have things changed now?   Can you be covered for breeding by an insurer if you have nil experience of breeding?

Bitch hasn't been shown either, just a pet :-(

I did a very quick spin through a couple of insurance websites and Bostons aren't covered.... as you'd expect.

Agria does it, and it has nothing to do with breeder experience. http://www.agriavet.co.uk/pages/ourpolicy.aspx

That's one of the ones I looked at - download their terms & conditions - Boston Terriers aren't covered for C-secs.

Significant Exclusions
* The fixed excess, which is the amount you pay towards
the first occurrence of each separate illness or injury
claimed for during each period of insurance. In addition
to the fixed excess, a percentage excess applies and will
be deducted from all claims submitted. The percentage
excess will be calculated on the amount left after the fixed
excess has been deducted. The fixed and percentage
excess applicable to your policy are specified in your
schedule of insurance.
* Fees for caesarean sections in the following breeds:
English Bulldog, French Bulldog, Boston Terrier, Pekingese.
* Any amount for fertility examinations, gestation and
whelping/kittening, and veterinary treatment for illness or
injury for each puppy of your dog or kitten of your cat,
arising within 12 weeks of the start of this policy section.
* Any claim once the pet has had 4 litters.
* Any amount for veterinary fees for puppies and kittens,
in respect of exclusions listed

Ah, I didn't click on that part. Seems a bit pointless to have breeding insurance that doesn't cover sections, although I suppose if anyone got unlucky there are still a few things it will cover even for those breeds.

Now I'm not used to reading insurance exclusions for pets, but it looks to me as if puppies of excluded breeds are not covered either.

Or am I reading this completely wrong?

Does this apply to experienced breeders, or to ayone breeding a litter regardless of experience - or none  ?

Bit late in this but NFU mutual covers emergency c sections etc issues if the section was needed to save the life of the bitch or offspring (which would be the case in emergency c section).
I think they cover such cases up to £1500...
You have to take a house insurance with a pet (don't think they do just pet insurance).
Very reasonably priced at least my branch and breed (Leonberger £4000 per year & house contents with accident cover total £44/month)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I very much doubt that vets will do caesarians because the bitch has decided she's "too posh to push"   (not talking about inertia btw )     :-D      so wouldn't all caesarians be to save the life of the bitch and/or pups?

Or are we talking elective caesarians, where the owner is insisting,  just in case?  But then, we are back to brachycephalic breeds again, which are mostly excluded in the small print.
