A relative has a completely detached retina and is waiting for surgery. She is really concerned that she won't get the sight back although they have said it should be OK. Anyone got any experience of this ? TIA

My Mum had this some years back, sods law we were in Africa at the time!! Luckily some world renowned surgeon was at the hospital. She did get her sight, but with a certain amount of blurring and double vision, as she wears glasses she now has a slightly clouded lens in that side of the glasses to reduce this, and she has good enough vision for all normal purposes including driving. I understand it is a case of getting the surgery the sooner the better, so if there's any hint of fobbing her off, make sure she is very insistent on being done asap! My Grandad also had one and he never got much sight in that eye, but of course that was a very long time ago, hopefully the technology is better now! Means I go for frequent check ups!!!

A friend of mine had this when she was flying to somewhere like Canada of America. She was flown back after some treatment there and had her surgery in UK. Everything was fine. I agree with the above, surgery should be done sooner rather than later.

My mum had this many years ago, and was operated  on. She was always short sighted but didn't have any new problems that I know of. My optician sent someone to have a repair a couple of years ago and the man has no problems.
