I wonder if anyone can help me with a search for a puppy.I want a small dog that will be company for me and will be able to accompany me for walks however, long or short. My husband works away during the week, so although I don't want a Rottweiler, a little 'guard' dog would be advantageous. I have two cats ages 2 so they must be a cat friendly breed. I would prefer one which didn't moult very much (myself and some relatives are prone to allergies) and I don't object to grooming. (I currently groom my cats even though they're short haired and they love it!!) I like a dog to have a lively character and not be too yappie. My neighbour has a Westie who is absolutely gorgeous and this deters me from having a Westie in case it's character is not a good as she is. I have fallen in love with the Coton Du Tulear but unfortunately think they may be too expensive to persuade my husband to buy one, also the waiting list I believe is very long. I work from home but may spend some time during the day out visiting clients or at the gym. I have a large back garden (200m2) which has a brook running along the bottom which has a 4 ft drop down to it. Anyone any suggestions as to what breed may suit me? Poodles are very good for company, they have big characters and don't shed their coat, so are often a good choice for people with allergies...

How about a Bichon

Corgi! They are very hardy, intelligent dogs [pastoral breed] which can cover long distances despite their short legs. They have a lovely easy maintenance coat which comes in various handsome colours - they do moult bi-annually but not for very long and not a huge amount. Regular brushing helps this. They make excellent companions and are not yappy - in fact they are very alert and will tell you when there is someone at the door. Their bark sounds like one of a much bigger dog. As they are a working dog they would love herding things in your garden but are also happy to laze in front of the fire.

Last but not least - they are not timid and if well socialised with other dogs they make friends very easily with any size of dog.
EDIT - I forgot - ours like cats too even after being swiped by one.
