hellp guys,  my bitch is  toy breed and currently 42 days pregnant, she has had a scan confirming and weekly checks at vets i.e urine in house checked etc as she has a urine infection and is been kept on antibiotics till whelping anyway my question is she is always a very laid back chilled kind of girl even in the show ring nothing phases her but for the last 2 days i have been trying to worm her with panacur syrup as i wanted to worm 40 days onwards, she was wormed 3 and a half weeks before mating and i did debate weather i should do immediately again before she saw stud but thought i would be over worming and to do the 40 days plus if she was confirmed in whelp and now im in a real dilemma as soon as my husband tries to open her mouth she is going mad shaking her head to the point she nearly vomited, so im wondering if there is a safe one dose wormer i can give as i would be horrified if she and her pups when born had a worm infestation, any advice would be much appreciated.

Put it in some tasty food.

I mix it into my bitch's food, or failing that try mixing it in something like yoghurt!

For many years I've wormed my toy breed when in whelp.  It's the pregnancy hormones that waken up all those dormant wrigglers.  So worming just before she went to the stud is not a lot of use.  You do your pups a great favour by using Panacur, as they will be born 98% worm free.  If you are trying to force it down the poor bitches throat I don't blame her for gagging.  :-(

As others have advised, hide it in food.  Do you mean that you are giving Panacur suspension, as I've never heard of syrup.  Are you using the Panacur 10% and not the 2.5% as you will need far less of the higher strength.  I poach white fish in milk and mix the wormer in, my bitches scoff it down.  Have you read the book of the bitch?

Thanks guys yeah its the suspension i call it syrup shes on royal canin mother and babydog dry and mouse and ive tried mixing it withe mouse and she wont touch it ill maybe try mixing it with fish tomorrow and see how that goes im starting to worry now as she shud of had the first dose 2 days ago.

I give it mixed with creamy Greek Yoghurt - full fat.

The dogs clear it so fast, you'd think it was nectar!   :-)

I have never wormed after a mating and before whelping I'm afraid.   I worm mum, when I first worm the puppies at 2 weeks.   Worming meds are a chemical after all and truly don't believe in all this worming, unless needed.

Likewise with scanning and continual vet visits at a time when a bitch should be living a quiet non-stressful life.

So both mum and puppies have worms after whelping - THEN is the time you worm them.   Most puppies will have some worms at birth, and mum may well pick up more as she cleans them up.   It's honestly nothing to be 'horrified' about!

ps   the only time I actually saw worms was with a singleton puppy we had.   I've never seen dead worms coming from our puppies otherwise although some wormers kill the worms and you never do.

Here I do agree with you 100 %. :) I ONCE wormed during pregnancy, my very first litter, and pups were still FULL of worms the first time they were wormed -and yes that was with Panacur. Since then I always worm mum just before mating and then mum and pups at 2-3 weeks the first time, with Drontal. I do not like Panacur at all, both because it has to be done over several days and because both puppies and kittens seems to absolutely hate it (have to use it for kittens as there is nothing else for young cats), whereas the Drontal seems to be tolerated better. And I've not had a problem. I also once bought a pup from a breeder who'd had a litter die when wormed with Panacur.

Mine lapped it up in some goats milk

I worm my bitches with Drontal prior to mating and then do mum and puppies at 2 weeks plus with the Drontl puppy syrup.
A little tip given to me by a very experienced breeder.  If the puppies are born at a weekend as my last litter were, delay worming till the Monday. As they need doing every 2 weeks and most prospective owners will want to visit at a weekend. You don't want to have wormed them the same day as you have visitors, just in case it causes them to be a little loose or sick. Mine were all fine, but some puppies can get a little tummy upset, so not very pleasant for them or visitors when handling them.

Thankyou so much guys i really appreciate all your advice im thinking shes been wormed before mating so will worm with puppies at 2 weeks old and so on after all i suppose you are right it is a chemical xx

If my bitch turns out to be pregnant I will be worming her from day 40 as I have done in the past, with no problems. Mixing the wormer in the food means they don't even notice it.

I'm trying DE (Diatomaceous Earth). A friend of mine recommended it. She uses it on all her dogs and does regular worm counts. She used it on her pregnant bitch through the pregnancy (and did worm counts) and then started the pups on it at weaning. She regularly did worm counts and every single one was clear at every test. I hate chemicals - we run an organic farm - so I'm glad to have an alternative to try.

Been worming with Panacur during pregnancy for 7 generations now with no issues, the only time I had issues was worming for the second time at five weeks with one litter (previously and since have done them at 3 and 7 weeks, with no problems).
