Topic Dog Boards / General / Grooming advice please???

A friend has a Wire Fox Terrier and is having problems as Eddie keeps picking up teasel type burrs in his coat. She finds them almost impossible to remove especially from tops of inner legs, belly etc.
I have no idea as Gsds have completely different coat (obviously!!)
Wondering if conditioning spray might make it easier or if anyone has any other suggestions please.
Thanks in advance from Kat & Eddie
Chris

Does she try to get them off straight away? I have an American cocker and find that a wide tooth comb works fairly well as long as I get to the burrs as soon as possible. If I miss one and find it a day or so later, it's hopelessly bedded in!

He picks them up on walks, don't know if you have been up to Knettishall heath but said they came back today and he had about 30 stuck in his coat !!!

I find that a slicker brush gets them out, but you have to do it immediately you get home.   Or better still, as soon as you leave the area.   Then a metal comb to make sure you've got them all.
Sounds mad carryinng a slicker on a walk, but worth it if it means they come out easier.

Does he have a profuse, clipped coat?     This is another area where stripping the coat helps to avoid problems ;-)

They could try a little talc in the coat, before trying to get them out.   It helps to lubricate the hairs and should help the burrs to come out - but use it sparingly, a little in the palm of the hand is  best ;-)    They could also try cornstarch (plain old cornflour)  which should also work.

Oh lord yes, that's a terrible area for picking up rubbish, mind you my boy picks up ridiculous amounts of rubbish just in the garden or walking round the block, I must give him a good bath and trim this week!!

I find this fabulous for getting those spiky burrs out without getting them embedded in your fingers and with minimal pulling to dog.

Hmm, worth a try. I've given up using that sort of thing for actual matts as it just cuts the fur and makes it matt worse when the short and long bits tangle post grooming. But it might help in a spiky burr situation!

Can I suggest something as a groomer??
If you can get a spray bottle of dezynadog magic trip amazing trix and spray it on the coat before she leaves less is more, and then some at home they will come out quite nicely with the usual greyhound metal comb....
They can be a moo to get out and I find this in my poodle coats is amazing!!!!

I have a dog with a wire coat.  I place a comb between the burr and the skin and hold it tight against the body: then I use a single 'stick' (like the pointy plastic handle of a hairdressers comb) to break the burr without pulling the hair.  Occasionally I wet the burr to help removal and have once used a spray oil from my kitchen cupboard!
