Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Too much milk?

I posted yesterday my girl had 10 pups, now a day old. It was my easiest whelping ever and when I took her to vet even he could not believe her condition and how clean she was. I was so pleased.
Pups seem strong and are feeding but suddenly I was aware that not all was well with her this evening. She was getting hard under neath, panting all the time and isn't laying with them as often as she should. I immediately massaged her underneath and some of the glands have eased. I then laid her down and put puppies onto the ones that has eased but some of them seemed to have had enough and started sleeping so will try that again later.
Any advice?

Just keep the pups feeding, wake them if need be, do not express excess milk, but use compresses if needed to ease pressure.

I'm assuming that they are all gaining?

You certainly get over fullness when the milk 'comes in' at day three with people, and I do notice similar on the third day with some of the girls, just be vigilant.  My only case of actual mastitis was at 10 days, and obviously an infection had got in (probably when weeing low, and hind gland touching the ground)

Ten!!!  Is this the bitch who you had timing traveling difficulties with and worried she would not get in whelp!t

Thanks. Yes this is the one!!! No problem there then LOL
She has been loads better when I did express some milk immediately putting the puppies on those.. She is very settled again with them now. I think the puppies are being fussy about which ones they take from - you would think with 10 they would take what they can get.
The pups are doing well although a bit of a panic when I did the 2nd weigh. I use our old shop scales so quite sturdy and reliable. I said to OH I can't understand it all the pups have lost weight by quite a margin. With my eyes they looked bigger but scales don't lie. He looked up and said we must have a real problem and then straight away spotted the paper roll holding up the metal plate that holds the weigh scoop. So now they have done really well. OK I am really tired Duh

Oh tell me about it the tiredness, just like after having a  baby can make you totally irrational and weepy.
