Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Weight gain in last couple of weeks

I know I shouldn't because I am torturing myself but as I have veterinary scales now for my grooming customers, I have been weighing my girl who is now on day 57. She stands on the scales quite happily but now I am concerned because she has not been putting on any more weight. She weighs the same now as she did a week ago and I thought that this last couple of weeks was when the puppies put on a lot of their final weight. I've not been able to do that before so never weighed them. She is being a lot more picky about her food. Three weeks ago I was worrying about her eating too much and getting too big.
I can see movement when she lies on her side. She is very big to me against her normal size. I am getting more and more nervous as the time nears and yet I have experienced a number of litters. This one is very special as she is such a lovely girl in looks and temperament - my best so far, and so I am really hoping as you do anyway that all goes well and that she produces something special for me.
Anyone got any experience about the weight thing.

Never weighed anyone pregnant but myself -but surely if she is eating less the pups could still be gaining. I myself always gained very little if any weight during pregnancy and ended up a lot lighter after the birth, as I lost weight myself but the baby each time was of good size.

Generally the foetus of any species will get what it needs at the expense of the mother if her nutrition is insufficient.

I would always say that the unborn pups will take all the nutrition they need.  It would seem that the pups may be taking from mum, and as they gain, she loses weight.  She sounds as if she is eating less as the pups take up all the space.

So Hazenaide.  :-)  Deep breaths!  Relax!  :-)

My girls was the same. Couldn't get enough food around weeks 5 & 6 to the point I was concerned she would pile weight on the have a difficult birth then in the last week or so she hardly ate much. She didn't put on any weight in the last week or so. I could do nothing to tempt her to eat much.  She whelped 3 big healthy pups on day 59 after I had worried myself sick over her hardly eating and not gaining weight!

Well she started to-night and had 6 pups in 2 hours absolutely no problems so far. I am so relieved. I thought she would be early.
5 girls and 1 boy. Well the man from Draminski said she would have more girls as the mating was late!!!
Don't know whether there are any more but really chuffed.

Well done. Glad things are going well. Any more?

Another arrived about 6.30.  5 boys, 5 girls.
Will get her off to the vet as soon as hubbie comes back from his Doctor's appt but she is sleeping with them in the pen now. She isn't laying with them all the time but they have all been feeding. She jumps up to go out when the other dogs bark and then wants to go back in the room.
I am trying to keep her happy at the same time as making sure the pups are OK.
She has been doing a lot of washing and watching. It is her first litter and she has been brilliant but not sure she is entirely sure what to make of them all.
