Topic Dog Boards / Health / Test for a season ?
- By codysholasmum [gb] Date 09.02.14 09:19 UTC
Is there a test that can be done for timeline for a season?
My daughters bitch has had 4 seasons 2 X 11 months + 2 X 6months.thats 1 -11months 1 -6months -repeating
She now has a boy approx 5 months old so needs to get her bitch sorted,
do any of you know of a test that she can have done so that she can book her bitch into the vets for neautering /speying , if she takes her to late (ie if she is having a 6 month one)
Or to early (if she is having a 11 month ) can this be a problem ?
As in all things doggy she wants what is best for Bella,
Thanking you in advance for  all advice x

As the shortest interval seems to be 6 months then spaying her 3 months after the end of a season, providing she's not showing any signs of phantom pregnancy, will be perfect. As long as the hormone levels are low then any time is fine.

I agree with Jeangenie although I might be more inclined to leave it 2 months from the previous season.   I'd also discuss this with your vet as he won't want to risk doing the spay op before the activity in the area, is dormant!!

Is it possible to do a hormone test now or would it need to be done at regular intervels (sp) to get a true reading ?

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone testing in this way; spaying can be done at any time if necessary. This bitch's cycle is well within normal parameters so the timing shouldn't be an issue.

I'd get it done 3 months from the start of her last season.

Unfortunately that's prime phantom-pregnancy time. Three months from the end is usually better.
