Topic Dog Boards / Health / Blood in urine

I have an entire cocker spaniel who is almost 4 years old. About 7/8 weeks ago he started to have blood in his urine. I took him to the vet and he subsequently had two scans, an x-Ray and tests for urine & blood infections, all of which are negative. The only thing that showed up was that his prostate was slightly enlarged, for which the vet prescribed tablets. This is now normal. He was referred to a specialist vet who carried out the same tests with much more sophisticated equipment, the results of which are all normal.

His urine is now sometimes clear and sometimes bloody

Has anyone any experience of this and could throw some ideas as to what may be the cause.

A fairly obvious thing that you have probably thought of. But it was a scare that I had many years ago with my son.
Your dog doesn't ever get beetroot in his food does he ?
Really worried me the first time my son peed blood until I realised the cause

Hi,
Thanks for that, but the vet assures me it's not food related

The only experience i have had is with a 2 year old b1tch and it has only happened on a couple of different occasions.

She had bright blood in her urine and it appears it was related to strenuous, stretched out exercise at the time.  She is medium/large breed.

So did your boy's bleeding happen after strenuous exercise?

Our boy had this problem until he was neutered at 7 years of age. It wasn't actually a problem as it was happening when he got excited (bitches in season) and he had tiny blood vessels bursting when things got 'swollen' down there LOL. All stopped once he was neutered but never gave him any problems.
