Hi all,

What are the relevant health tests for a bulldog before breeding and what should the results be to give the ok for breeding ?

Thanks

according to US statistics for hips the bulldog is the no1 worst breed for hip status.

Hip Dysplasia by Breed
Breeds having at least 100 evaluations January 1974 through December 2013

All Data
Breed        Rank   Number of Evaluations   Percent Excellent   Percent Dysplastic
BULLDOG  1               536                                 0.4                      72.0

Born 2006-2010
                                          98                                         1.0                      61.2

Sadly very few bulldogs have been hip scored in the UK under the BVA system, only 26 as at 11/11/'11
range of scores: 9 - 96, Bread Mean Score: 44, 5 Year Mean: 52 (so getting worse), Median: 45, so really hips are pretty awful, and I can't understand why breeders are not scoring????

I am new to the bulldog breed and trying to gain as much information and knowlege as possible so all is welcome and i will definitely be looking into it. We have always owned german shepherds so i understand hip scoring but its a very iffy subject i think because like a lot health test it doesnt not have to be submitted so there is actually no true breed average. With mine i always submitted no matter the score highest i received was 30. she was immediately spayed even though i know hips isnt everything and her construction and temprement flawless elbows 0 pedigree to die for in my opinion but 30 was just to high.
Bulldogs on the other hand im just getting into it so arent sure on tests or appropriate scores or what bulldog breeders should be testing for so lots of reading and speaking to the experts i think before i have any breeding plans of my own with my girl but all opinions and knowledge is welcome :-)

Have you researched the bulldog breed society UK?   See www.bulldogbreedcouncil.co.uk

Should give you pointers in the right direction.
