Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Put to rest at aged 12yrs - Dobe
- By guest [gb] Date 06.02.03 19:04 UTC
Earlier this year at aged 6yrs (nearly 7) my young dobe had to be put to sleep following diagnosed with Bone Cancer following a slight limp. Within the month she had to be put to sleep. I have today just had to book in her mum to also be put to sleep at aged 12 -She also had cancer but of the tummer type & due to heart condition & the fact that the cancer had already spread beyond operation level we have been on a waiting game. I have had another 3 years with her but although she has been a very fit dog - continuing to go on 2hours walks every day the last 6mths has taken its toll, and she can no longer walk for longer than 10mins.
She is showing all the signs of Cushings (increased water/food intake, loss of coat on her flanks, pot belly...) and to top it also Wobbler syndrome - she used to move with such drive (and won several shows over the years) but now hops with her back legs instead. It is always hard to decide when is 'right' but after leaving her daughter for too long I think we now have to say goodbye

Poor you. :( :(

It's never easy to decide when the time is right. You will know, deep down, when she's not getting the quality of life she deserves.

I think you 'know ' when the time has come and you can do her the biggest honour by letting her go in peace
best wishes to you

I'm very sorry to hear about your dobe, I lost my 6 year old dobe about 12 weeks ago in a very nasty accident and I am still very devastated about it. I knew I had no other choice other than to end it for her but It's never easy to make the decision to let them go, especially when they were/are so beautiful, fit and active, but then again it's even harder to watch them suffer. I read something somewhere once along the lines of "better a moment too soon than a minute too late" which for me holds a lot of truth.

Thoughts are with you
