Can anyone remember the saying about time served in dogs?  I have heard it applied to both breeding and judging, it's something about people thinking they are experts to begin with and once time served and knowledge gained they realise how much there is to learn still?

Only the one that....

"newcomers start off by ASKING you....very soon they're TELLING you".

Only a general one - the more you learn the less you know

Not knowing enough to know what you don't know???

Thanks everyone, very pertinent, but none are the one I'm looking for.  It was about 3 stages I think, novice, mid and later, I've seen it quoted here a few times, hopefully someone will see this an remember - but I do love Toolz version. :)

That's the Conscious Competence learning model - the statement above relates to stage 1 of 4 and is 'Unconscious Incompetence'.  I don't recall the quote Gwen is looking for but I don't think it's related to this model...

Was it something like
x years a puppy, x years an adult & x years an old dog ?  I can't remember it accurately.

Isn't that quote, 3 years a puppy, 3 years a young dog, 3 years an old dog all else is a gift from God?  Or something along those lines ;)

That's the Conscious Competence learning model

It goes back to at least mid 1970's which is the period I remember it from & it wasn't new then.

Unconscious incompetence/conscious incompetence/conscious competence/unconscious competence. That's the process of aquiring skills.

Unconscious incompetence/conscious incompetence/conscious competence/unconscious competence. That's the process of aquiring skills.

Sounds a bit like something you'd find the application form for Oxford Uni.......or is it Oxon Uni.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, but none of the above!  It is something about many just starting out  see themselves as knowing everything, those who have done it for a while  think they know a lot, but  only those who have been in the game a long time realise how much there is still to learn, but said in a much snappier way :)

After 1 year you think you know everything, after 5 years you think you know something, and after 20 years you realise you hardly know anything at all.

Something along those lines?
- By gwen [gb] Date 24.01.14 12:25 UTC
Yes, something like that, but not quite!

"When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years."   Mark Twain

:)

I have a funny feeling this isn't it but it's good, eh?
