Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / General pyo question please
- By Freewayz [gb] Date 19.01.14 23:35 UTC
My bitch was in season ...started  the week before Christmas and finished just after the new year. I have 2 neutered males and one un-neutered male....she had no access to the entire male..but I let her play with the other two...she is just over the year.
I left her to play with one of the boys and he mated her...they had a brief tie and she and he seem no worse for wear...in fact she flopped down with her chews and acted as though thing happened.
I wanted to ask how common is pyo in a first season ( I've never had a bitch in season before) and would being mated by a neutered male make her more at risk?  And could being mated by a neutered male entice her into false pregnancy?

I'm a wee bit worried about her..she's almost 3 weeks past the day he did the business and she's swollen mammaries ( they look bruised around each teat) and she's reduced appetite even though she's a good feeder( will eat tasty bites like chicken) she seems depressed and not as interested in her toys..she was a bit sick last night but has normal poops and no sickness since.

She'll be seeing the vets if no improvement tomorrow....but was just wondering in the mean time.

Cheers
J

I have to say I have had bitches mated by neutered dogs many times, and I've never had a problem -not even a single false pregnancy. The latest bitch I had to have a first season (did not get any mating as only much smaller neutered dogs were near her and they did not bother even though they would have done with a bitch their own size) did have swollen teats for quite a while after her season though. My husband even kept saying "she must have been caught!" when there was absolutely no way she could have been. The teats eventually shrank back. I can only answer for definite for my own dogs, but the earliest I have had a pyo was aged just under 3 and most people then said "Wow that was early in life". The earliest I have known a bitch belonging to a friend develop pyometra though was at 18 months and that was not after the first season.

The only pyometra I've had in 30 years was in a 6.5 month old bitch and her first season!  :(

Have you taken her temperature?  Is she drinking more than usual?  Any discharge, although if it's closed you won't see anything but she will have a raised temperature and be drinking more.

My bitch had Pyo at nine months.

Not taken her temp...she does drink quite a bit in one go but she's always done as she prefers a certain bowl to others and will wait then gorge on water...no discharge but when feeling her tummy she is obviously sore..
She's is slightly better form this morning..and ate her breakfast..with chicken and rice added..so hopefully it's just a dickey tummy..

To me it sounds like she is having a phantom pregnancy, timing wise it sounds about right for the symptoms to develop.
Teats being bigger, being not hungry and sick and slowing down/being a bit delicate are all very much symptoms I expect when dog is pregnant or indeed thinks she is...

I suppose there could be more of a risk of PYO if bacteria has entered her in the mating but 3 weeks sounds quite long time for it to develop.

I would take her temperature and keep an eye on her and expect some imaginary puppies to appear in 6 weeks.

I too would be taking her temperature before worrying anymore or going to the vet. :)

I suppose it is possible for the male who mated with her to have introduced an infection but that would be hard luck.   Having said that, I'd NOT leave an in-season bitch with any male, neutered or not because quite honestly tensions are high enough when there's a bitch in season under the same roof.

In all the years we had entire bitches in our small show kennel, we never had a pyometra.   We had one with juv.vaginitis when a puppy which took a while to clear (several switches of antibiotics until we had a swab, culture and identification done) but that was all.   None of my bitches was taken off our property when in season, and each was kept quite away from all the other hounds, for the entire 21+ days.

I have no first-hand knowledge about being mated by a dog firing blanks and a false pregnancy.   Again we had the occasional one doing this, but once retired, ALL our bitches were spayed.    I'd suggest being mated like this would have no bearing on her going into a false pregnancy which I'd suggest wouldn't be evident until she had gone 'full term' (had she been mated by an entire male)

How long ago was the male who mated with her castrated because you do realise that sperm can live on for a while after castration!!   She could be pregnant.     I think I'd get her in to be scanned (and I don't normally suggest this!!!) just in case she IS pregnant.

It could just be a phatom pregnancy,  but do not hesitate if you think it's Pyo. I have lost a bitch to enclosed pyo its not worth the risk.  Hope she is ok

The dog who did the dirty deed has been castrated for 7 years..:-)

Funnily enough my wee bitch came as a result of a bitch with a silent season and a dog who had been castrated for 2 weeks...

She will be spayed but vet wanted her to have a season as she had a inverted vulva...they said it would pop it out to normal and reduce it causing her recurring urine infections.

She's in good form this evening...ate her dinner reluctantly with no bribes....so we shall see...will try her temp soon as I find the doggie thermometer..
