I have 2 bitches 1x6yr old & 1x3yr old - older girl was going to be speyed later in the year but for various reasons I would like to prevent their next season and was looking at Delvosteron as an interim option - I'm not in a position to breed the younger girl at the minute but things may change. Anyone with experience with this? They are both due in anyday.

I would never, ever do it again -and certainly never with a bitch I may want to breed from. Used it on a bitch as she was entered for a world show. She never had a normal season again after that, went about a year without one then had a silent season and got mated by accident by her son as I did not know she was in season, so was then spayed during early pregnancy. The vet told me the pups did not appear normal at all. Have heard far too many similar stories.

Norethisterone is now the drug of choice for use in bitches. It is a progesterone only pill and does not appear to create any adverse problem if you wish to breed form your bitch at a later date.

Thanks Marianne, don't want to risk anything like that so will give it a miss

If your planning at all to breed from the bitch then don't use it.  It carries a high risk of pyometra and also messes up the womb.

The bitch I used it on and then spayed had a womb full of cysts and fluid and I only used it for a year.

I'm not sure what it was (because it was years ago, and out in Canada in any case) but I have, once, used something to prevent a season (given right at the very start of a season to work) as I wanted to take her to an important show - and NOT in season.   Only once, and I have since heard that this has been withdrawn because of adverse side effects.  My bitch was fine however, but I only used this the one time.
